Worsening the current fuel crisis in Sri Lanka, over 90 percent of the country`s filling stations have already been closed by this afternoon due to lack of fuel as a result of the work-to-rule campaign launched by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation employees.

The work-to-rule campaign, called by the state-owned oil company last Wednesday midnight entered into a third consecutive day today with no resolution in sight.

According to the CPC, 173 filling stations owned by them have already been closed due to lack of fuel.

The CPC unions said that any of their employees had not reported to overtime duties on Saturday and it would be the same tomorrow also.

The distribution department of the CPC said that nearly 600 trucks, each carrying 6,600 liters of fuel stocks usually leave for various parts of the country on Saturdays, but no one had left this morning.

The Chairman of the Petroleum Corporation Major General Ashoka Thoradeniya said measures have been taken to distribute fuel throughout the country without any delay and a large number of fuel bowsers have been dispatched with fuel.

However, long queues are forming today too at many fuel stations in and around Colombo as well as at the outstations, but the motorists have to leave the filling stations empty tanked.

The CPC employees have resorted to this union action demanding an interim allowance of Rs. 5,000 until they receive a pay raise.

The CPC unions held talks with Petroleum and Petroleum Resources Development Minister A.H.M Fowzie on last Thursday morning, but the talks ended without a decision. They have agreed to meet the President on Monday.

The CPC Chairman said the union action is unreasonable, especially when the government is really engaged in solving matters in petroleum sector.

The union action launched by the opposition backed unions is seen as a start of a pre-election campaign against the government.

These are not genuine Labour grievances. Don't give into them.

FIRE the leaders.

Give publicity to this by explaining to the people in a way that makes UNP unpopular and making people angry with UNP.

Take this opportunity to get rid of employees with poor performance and make the company more profitable.

This is why govt should stay away from businesses.

Sri Lanka is recovering after a 30 year terrorist war.
This is not the time for petty conflicts hampering the huge development projects undertaken by the government.
All parties should come together to discuss their problems and find solutions rapidly.
If discussions fail, its the duty of the government to provide essential services to the general public.
A handful of leaders should not be given the power to lead workers like cattle or dogs to obey them.
When all possible ways fail, the President and the government should deploy the Army to run essential services.
Since the end of the war we have enough Army personnel to serve the country, when need arises.
Now its the time.
Distribution of petroleum products is an essential service.
Mr. President, the whole Nation will salute you for your courage!

If its work to rule, shouldn't the fuel get delivered? Otherwise it's high time to change the rules!

No one is indispensable, sack the stupid lot and and recruit new workers, those thousands of people without jobs will be only too glad to get into these idiotic strikers shoes.
Why can't they just petition or hold a peaceful protest march on their off days, after all these are essential services & should never be disrupted, what their doing tantamount to blackmail, their demands should never be met . Can someone say the opposition and its cronies are behind this? This is definitely a act of crime its not because their demands of pay hike but for crippling the country, they should be severely dealt with.

Lol: Mr. B has become a MR hack or what?
This is not a strike but work to rule, they are going slow alright but the are refusing OT. If OT is the real cause of the problem it means that operational area's are understaffed but everyone knows CPC itself is overstaffed and under worked. So where is the problem, management and political appointees doing nothing. So clean it up you will be able to pay fair wage to people who actually do the job.
Right now as an emergency procedure use the military to distribute the fuel without moaning.
