Operation Rah-i-Nijat (Path to deliverance) Is Underway In Pakistan`s South Waziristan

Tuesday, 20 October 2009 - 3:56 PM SL Time

Pakistan military has launched Operation Rah-i-Nijat (Path to deliverance) on October 17th in South Waziristan against foreign backed terrorists ` Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan` TTP.

It is a critical ground operation against anti-taliban insurgents supported by aerial strikes. As a pak army official put it, it is a Punitive expedition, not COIN (counter insurgency operation).

The army is supposed to take over the tribal territories within next two months.

Lets see the parties stack against each other.

Pak Military :
Approximately 30,000 army soldiers were taking part in the operation, which is a combination of ground offensive and aerial strikes. Aerial strikes include fighter jets, gunship helicopters and aerial surveillance vehicles. While the foot soldiers are supported by heavy Armour and artillery.

Tehreek-e-Taliban (South Waziristan):
The estimated number of hardcore religious extremists and militants in South Waziristan was 10,000. The number includes 1,000 to 1500 foreign militants, most of them Uzbek. Besides, border with Afghanistan allows them reinforcements (Afghans, Uzbeks, Arabs) and not to mention arms and ammunition from all the anti-Pakistan sources

30,000 soldiers backed by aerial strikes against 10000 terrorists! And the job is to be finished in two months.

If you ask Gen Fonseka, he will need 200000 soldiers and two years to get the same job done! :)))

Bakmoona,

You mean the rest 10 divisions were deplyed to protect Colombo! :))

You got your wires crossed, my friend! :))

14 divisions were deployed in NE 'at any given time' during 'eelam war 4'.

Pak army's total troop level is 700000 and 500000 thousands of them are deployed on Indian border. And the rest are Afgan border and northwest insurgency.

Sri Lanka has no border deployment or external threat perception. And the troops have been deployed almost entirely in NE.

from a defence expet :))

Rather, from a guy who reads newspapers regularly! :)))

SLA got enough support from SLAF. More couldn't have made any critical difference given the nature of engagement.

LTTE was cut off and cornered from all sides. Taliban has their supply routes across Afgan border more or less intact. In fact, Pak strategy is to cut this off in the initial stage before moving for the final assault.

The number of SLA deployed in the battlefront was about 50,000, not 200,000. The LTTE had about 25,000 cadres. It's about the same ratio in Waziristan.

Maninder - Comeon!
Jaffna-East divisions were holding groundwar concluded.
Active 'invasion' of North was 57th-58th 59th 55th 53rd- and a coupleof TFs. All not at the same time either.

As for the time frame vs Pak operation- thats a PUNITIVE operation.
Ours was 'humanitarian'- :))
You surely rival goodold Gen Mehtha! o:)
