With its 25-year civil war over, Sri Lanka is enjoying rising tourism - and the return of investors to the home market.
For somewhere the size of Ireland, Sri Lanka packs an alluring punch with its palm-tree-fringed beaches, colonial tea plantations, unique wildlife and ancient cities and temples. But the savage war that has raged for more than 25 years between the majority Sinhalese and the Tamil minority has had a devastating effect on the island`s economy and tourism.
The insurgency was formally declared over last May when the last stronghold of the Tamil Tigers was taken, and the effect was immediate. By August, tourism was 35 per cent up on 2008, and enterprising locals are predicting a sharp revival of the island`s economic fortunes.
Writer Charlotte Breese, 58, fell in love with the area after she began holidaying there in 2000. She now spends the winter at her home outside Tangalle with her journalist husband Irfan Husain, 65, and a seemingly endless flow of family and friends - 75 of them visited last year.
The couple paid 80,000 for the one-acre plot in 2002 but didn`t start building until 2006. It was tardiness that Charlotte was to appreciate after the 2004 tsunami devastated the coastline and inundated the building plot.
At the end of last year the couple finally completed Thalassa - their seven-bedroom, sevenbathroom house, that comes with pool and massage temple as well as staff quarters. The build cost was `something less than 400,000`.

MrBrown,
It's the wrong photo on the main page related to the subject.

The best property in the island is in Tamil Eelam....
Dispora had started a Tamil Diaspora Fund (TDF) to invest in property market... very soon property in Mulaitive and Prabhapuram (Trinco) is going to be at the same level as Vancouver, Canada...!
TDF is opend only for Tamil Diaspora, though...! |

I wonder why Mr B put this story up in relation to trourism development.
This is the result of Ranil's liberalization of land tenure laws that led foreigners to buy land in SL and most of the coastal lands with scenic appeal were bought by foreigners. They build lodgings like this couple and promote their friends and relatives to spend some time here. Except for the money that is spent on meals (very little in dollars) the rest doesn't even come to SL banks, they must be in their home bank accounts.
What happens at the end of the day is these foreigners make money out of our resources and invest them in other countries (their home country) and what they have invested on the buildings is only 400,000 (it could be not $ but Rs!)!
All the foreigners to whom Ranil ponse had sold land will start business now with Mahinda's peace! |

Wasn't that law repealed and tougher laws put in place for foreigners who want to buy land in SL? |

Yes, the truth is that they're building McDonald's outlets everywhere in the Tamil Only Homeland(TM). |
