`Fishermen assaulted by Sri Lankan navy`

Rameswaram (TN) Oct 11 (PTI) A fishermen`s association here alleged that Sri Lankan navy personnel today assaulted a group of Tamil Nadu fishermen near Katchathivu in Palk Straits.

The fishermen, who had put out to sea from Rameswaram and Mandapam, were scared away by Lankan navy personnel by firing in the air, Fishermen Association President N J Bose said.

He alleged that the navy men snapped their fishing nets and also broke their Global Positioning Systems.

Katchathivu is an islet ceded to Sri Lanka by India in 1974.
