Stand Off In Pak Army Head Quarters - Taliban Holds Officers Hostage

Saturday, 10 October 2009 - 9:59 PM SL Time

RAWALPINDI: Taliban militants were holding several security officers hostage inside Pakistan`s army headquarters on Saturday after they and others attacked the complex in an audacious assault on the country`s most powerful institution.

The attack, which left at least 10 people dead, was the third major militant strike in Pakistan in a week and came as the government was planning an imminent offensive against Islamist militants in their strongholds in the rugged mountains along the border with Afghanistan.

It showed that the militants retain the ability to strike at the very heart of Pakistan`s security apparatus despite recent military operations against their forces and the killing of Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud in a CIA drone attack in August.

An army statement said more than two terrorists were holding several officers hostage in a ``security office building`` inside the heavily fortified complex close to the capital.

The whereabouts of military chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani was not known. Separate army statements said he had attended meetings at the headquarters and at the president`s office in nearby Islamabad during the day.

Pakistan army joins the company of Sri Lanka army where terrorists have been able to hit inside the army head quarters.

In Sri Lanka, the army chief was hospitalized for months.

In Paksitan, it looks like senior officers are taken hostage.

The terrorists launched attack this morning and the reports are now emerging indicating a stand off.

Not really. Taliban is a threat to India as well.

However with the Indian embassy bombing in Kabul on last Thursday and Afghanistan's accusation of Pak ISI involvement in it, Indians will be trying hard to hide their glee!

Looks like god has decided to intervene on India's behlf! :))

Those things do not happen in Inida. So, Black cats run towards the Pakistani terrorists and get killed. Remember Marriot hotel - debacle.

Anud,
Remember Marriot hotel

In India, they attack soft targets like places of worships, hotels and railway stations, where there is no presence of armed forces.

When they attack places in India which are protected by armed forces, they don't succeed. The attack mounted on Indian parliament was diffused in an hour.

Very rarely, terrorists attack military installations or places protected by armed forces.

The very fact that terrorists in SL and now in Pakistan choose to attack armed forces head quarters and bases with permieter defences (eg BIA and Anuradhapura) tells the differences that some Sri Lankans and Pakistanis will find inconveneient! :))

Maninder,

???

The bomber hardly got into the HQ grounds and SF's bodyguards sacrificed their lives to save him. When will India join Sri Lanka in militarily defeating terrorism?

And this attack is sad to see. We need to train those Pak soldiers ASAP. It's the least we can do for a good friend.

I agree with Maninder. LTTE tamils were allowed to roam among others freely. That is why could think of attacking any targets.

Now LTTE is cornered into camps among civilians govt should release them easily because of the outside influence.

They should be screened thoroughly before releasing.

Whoever you send to train pakistanis, don't send those who were in charge of BIA and Anuradahpura! :)))

It took 14 hours in BIA and 9 hours in Anuradhapura! :))

Pakistanis at the moment seem to be doing better than this!
