Opposition UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe alleged that senior LTTE leaders such as Daya Master and George Master were spared because they had threatened to reveal the truth about a secret meeting between the government and the LTTE in the Wanni.
Mr. Wickremesinghe made these allegations at a Deniyaya election rally where he urged the government to reveal details of these talks held in the Wanni between the LTTE and the Presidential Secretary.
He said that based on Daya Master s threat the former Attorney General had claimed that the two suspects were not a threat to the nation.
Mr. Wickremesinghe who reiterated that Sri Lanka could not be hauled before the International Criminal Court as the country was not a signatory said during his tenure as Prime Minister in 2002, he had refused calls by many countries to be a party to the agreement.
I have thus been able to safeguard our brave soldiers by my foresight, he said.
But Mr. Wickremesinghe said the United States was in a position to haul its citizens before the International Criminal Court on war crime charges.
He accused government politicians of disgracefully attempting to take the full credit for the military successes against terrorism.
They have ignored the brave lads from villages who made great sacrifices to defeat LTTE terrorism, Mr. Wickremesinghe said
He charged that government politicians had forgotten the difference between state property and private property.
They are even treating state institutions as their own property as power as corrupted them, he said.
Mr. Wickremesinghe alleged that the government was trying to destroy some political parties in its greed for power.
Our party will always be present to play an active role in the politics of Sri Lanka even though some Paradeshiya Sabha members leave the party, he said.

An utter loser who gave the country on a plate to LTTE is now asking questions.
This is a pathetic person who has born to destroy the country.
Why Mangie and Ranil could clean each others tubes and be merry and not to worry about LTTE? |

A Sri Lankan asylum seeker deported at the weekend has been arrested and charged with people smuggling in Colombo, the Age newspaper reported. Indika Mendis was among nine men flagged for forced deportation last week as the Government began returning people from Christmas Island to countries of origin against their will.
He failed to meet criteria for protection in Australia.
According to the Age newspaper in Australia the Australian Immigration Department confirmed the arrest and that it sought more information on its circumstances. It is alleged the man was beaten by police and was too frightened to speak.
''Whether someone has broken Sri Lankan law is something for the Sri Lankan courts to determine,'' a departmental spokesman said.
Mr Mendis was named as the skipper of a boat that sailed into Shark Bay, Western Australia, last November. But the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre's Pamela Curr said the real criminal was still at large.
When Daily Mirror online contacted police spokesman senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka over the report he was unable to confirm the specific case but said that it is normal procedure for any illegal asylum seeker deported back to the country to be arrested.
The police spokesman added that if there were any report of beatings or harrassment at the hands of Lankan officials he would have been made aware of it, but said that as such he had recieved no such information on the matter. (RR)
