Lankan dancers mesmerize Delhi

Tuesday, 6 October 2009 - 5:28 PM SL Time

NEW DELHI: The third day of the Delhi International Arts Festival (DIAF) 2009 belonged to the expression of Sinhala dance and Sri Lanka`s modern dance form pioneered by Chitrasena.

Besides showcasing the hardship of fisherfolk, it brought out issues of caste, religion, gender, love and identity along with a beautiful contrast of hope and despair.

The 10-day festival organised in association with The Times of India is a curtain raiser to the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi. The fest is showcasing some of the unique art forms from various Commonwealth nations. And one could not have asked for more from the island nation.

The performance by the renowned Chitrasena Dance Company which has presented a dozen scintillating acts that have enthralled audiences across the world for the past five decades was simply spellbinding.

Monday`s performances offered Delhiites a glimpse into the best of Amaratunga Arachige Maurice Dias alias Chitrasena, who infused a new dynamism into and revived Sri Lanka`s traditional dance. The artistes presented some of the famous dance drama such as Nala Damayanthi and Ravana.

The highlight of the day was the incredible `Theiya` a Kandyan dance technique in which dancers display their virtuoso movements in interpreting a particular segment by switching roles as the lead dancer, presenting sheer joy, energy and movement.

The colourful performances showcased all aspects of the urban and rural life in Sri Lanka and were picked up from different parts of the country and its heritage. The uniqueness of the performance lay in its exotic mask dances, the rhythmic throb of drums and fiery ritual dances that brought alive the centuries-old dance tradition.

Although dance has been a part of the country`s culture and tradition for thousands of years, it was only in the 1930s with the vision of Chitrasena an expert in the traditional dance forms of Sri Lanka and the first professional dancer in his country that this ancient art was given a new life as it was adapted on the modern stage.

For the hardship of fisherfolk part, it shows SLN stripping tamil nadu fishermen, As for the religion and love part, it is a love story between an IDP girl and a SLA deserter who comes to the camp to benefit the amnesty period! :))

No, i was just joking! :))

Chitrasena-Vajira Dance Foundation presented two of its famous performances 'Nala Damayanthi' its interpretation of a story from Mahabharatham and 'Ravana'.

'Nala Damayahti' tells the love story aided by a swan as messenger and 'Ravana' is telling Ramayanam from Ravana's perspective.

Chitrasena choreographed both productions decades back using traditional sinhala dance forms. It is too bad that anud the singalese nationalist doesn't know much about a Sri Lankan who made his country proud and his works.

Is there a troupe from the Andamans? They are very 'foreign' to India, but the British masters told Hindians they can have it:-) So, Andaman is Indian and 'Ceylon' is foreign.

TNTamil,
the British masters told Hindians they can have it:-)

Years back, I used to feel nervous when chauvunists make factually inaccurate and perverted comments on history.

Then I realized that probably our greatest advantage lies in the very fact that chauvunists are inaccurate and perverted on history. The moment they start getting the facts right and clarity in thought and use it to advance their cause, the civilization will be in trouble!

So, Please be my guest! Andaman is Indian and Ceylone is forign because british masters told Hindians they can have it! :)))))))

Maninder!

And one could not have asked for more from the island nation.

I remember the good old days RG's love affair with the LTTE and then for all those sins of Indira Ghandi & RG, our soldiers payed a heavy price and saw that TN's 'separatism' agenda is shattered into pieces! Hence...Mother India could breathe...

Thus...I repeat....

'one could not have asked for more from the island nation.'

I still have a score to settle with u, but time doesn't allow me to present a long reply back to U!! Therefore to make it brief..I will bring back your last post of that photo article and will make a brief answer!

Indias hands were forced to poke in Sri Lanka.

And that is not b'cos of 'tamils'..and don't let me call you too 'as usual' a gullible Indian! However I still doesn't understand Y India burnt her hand by trying to poke her hand into China..and I guess China is still occupying Indian territory since 1962!

Now that India's hands are here, Sri lanka will not settle down as singalese budhist country!

Sure!! We will delightly take that gurantee and see that India too will mind it's own buisness without poking her greedy nose into her neigbours! We showed & proved that India's reginal terrorism agenda is shattered and I guess she (India) will ahev to think twice b4 she pokes her hand into other countries!

I mean into SOVEREIGN Countries!

And we will also see that India will not take the credit of defeating the ltte at the expense of our soldiers who sacrificed their lives to our beautiful motherland!

You can take that as a guarantee.

Deborak,
that is not b'cos of 'tamils'

India tried to buy peace with its tiny neighbour Sri Lanka since 1948, often going out of its way.

Sri Lanka demanded and got the soverignity over Kathcithivu. Sri Lanka demanded and got India's acceptance to take tamils of Indian origin who made stateless through legislations after Sri Lanka's indpendence. In 1971, India kept mum when when Sri lanka allowed Pakistan airforce to use its bases on the way to attack India in Bangladesh war. India did nothing more than verbally appealing to Sri lankan leadership for wisdom when singalese ethnic chauvunism marched in Sri Lanka through ethnic riots, sinhala only rule and 1978 constituion.

It is a historic fact that till 1983, India went out of the way meeting Sri lanka's demands to buy and buying its peace.

But there is only so much you can do. 1983 riots against tamils with government complicity and exodus of refugees was the breaking point.

In case you don't know the exodus of refugees into its terriotry is a legitimate reason for a country to interfere in the neighbouring country under international laws.

The lesson is that appeasement didn't work since 1948 till 1983. India started talking in the language that Sri Lanka understands in 1983. And now Sri Lanka listens!

As we speak, hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankan refugees continue to be sheltered in India. Many of them reached just after 1983 violance.

An ethno exclusionary state like tamil eelam was against the vital interests of India. So is an ethno exclusionary states like singalese budhist one.

It is India that stood between LTTE and Tamil eelam for more than a decade and It is India that is standing between singalese chauvunists and singalese budhist state. That is the reality on which we are standing today.

Sri Lanka will not settle down to be singalese budhist state. Take that as a guarantee.
