COLOMBO (AFP) Sri Lanka will not declare a ceasefire despite growing international concern about 250,000 civilians trapped by fighting with Tamil rebels, Human Rights minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said on Friday.

`There will be no ceasefire,` the minister told reporters after a meeting with Colombo-based diplomats. `We will continue with our military operations and we will continue to liberate areas which had not been liberated so far.`

His remarks came amid growing concern for the safety of civilians trapped in the northeast of the island, where the defence ministry says it is conducting the final phase of operations against Tamil Tiger guerrillas.

Disagree. There is no reason for not having a 48 hour temporary ceasefire, to let the civillians escape

Putting aside the obvious humanitarian reasons for a temporary ceasefire, if the civillians are continued to be held- the LTTE's nakedness will be displayed to the world..

If the civillian are let go by the LTTE, the remaining LTTE cadres can be wiped of the face of the earth with less loss of life to the SLA

Bad call on the part of the GOSL.

As LTTE is in disarray, 48 hours is more than enough for LTTE to position things and kill more of our soldiers.

According to BBC sinhala, LTTE has said that civilians will remain with tigers

Hunch,

This is what happening now.....:-)))

Tamil Tigers continues to forcibly hold the innocent civilians without allowing them to cross into safe areas

Tamil Tigers continue to hold on the innocent Tamil civilians as human shield without allowing them to leave to safe areas through the 'No Fire Zone' corridor. Sri Lankan Army sources told 'Asian Tribune' only 9 people managed to flee yesterday into the Army controlled area though LTTE fired at them while fleeing.

Yeah mate, saw that. But a safe passage will be no different to the safe zones that the SLA tried to implement. The LTTE will just ignore it and claim the SLA is shelling the safe area.

However a temporary ceasefire for 48 hours, with conditions that if attacked the SLA will retaliate, and the ceasefire is only for land and does not extend to maritime....

The LTTE will not have a leg to stand on. If they release the civillian. We all win.

If they continue to hold the civillians - the LTTE will be exposed to the world (including the diaspora) for the terrorists they are... and the SLA can continue with operations..

it's a win-win situation for the GOSL either way.

And it is the humanitarian thing to do here. Got to try it and see for the sake of the civillians here..

The only option lTTE has to hold to these innocent Tamils who have suffered enough at the hands of these guardian angles. if LTTE are so brave as they tend to portray , the should fight the army like real fighters without hiding behind those innocent civilians.

as for a ceasefire asked by Nadesen, go and ask your Sun god as to why he messed up last ceasefires.
