The second of the prefabricated flyovers will be vested in the people at Nugegoda Junction today. The Government under its macro development program has reduced congestion in Colombo City as well as traffic congested areas in various parts of the Island. The Ministry of Highways and Road Development, commenced work on the prefabricated flyover at Nugegoda Junction on October 01, 2008. The Nugegoda Flyover and Kelaniya Flyover were planned to comprise four traffic lanes. This flyover is 261 meters long and 8.7 meters wide cost Rs. 878 million. It was funded by the British Government, whilst installation was handled by the British Company Mabey & Johnson under the direction of the Road Development Authority. The daily traffic snarls at Nugegoda junction prior to this project, resulted in waste of time and fuel.

It is good to reduce congestion.
But if one look at overall Colombo traffic state we need a big overall plan with an entirely new road, metro railway network. Nothing significant could be achieved by putting patch expansions to roads build 100 years ago by British colonial masters.

Under pass from Kohuwala side to Nugegoda Junction would 've not made this monstor kill the urban quality in Nugegoda. Old Nugegoda no more. There the natural terrain is for a under pass. Rather go by blanket formulas at junctions, solutions should be based on the case. Anyway, now we have a bridge, less waiting time. Having said that, I experienced much much less waiting time during the construction of this bridge as all the traffic lights were switched off.
