The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry has appointed 48 doctors for Northern and Eastern Province hospitals and this is the first step of upgrading the free health service in liberated areas, Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry sources said.
After handing over appointment letters intern doctors, Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition Nimal Siripala de Silva provided medical equipment worth over Rs. 80 million to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital to ensure a quality service to war heroes.
The newly appointed doctors in cleared areas need not worry about their safety as the Ministry has assured their safety.

This is not something that Siripala did for the first time. every year, an almost similar number of doctors are allocated to these areas. In fact, doctors are the only trained professionals that are posted in such numbers to the north and east. They have to work in those areas for a minimum of one year, so somebody from the next batch comes to release him from the particular station. He is trying to get political mileage for work done by others.
Procurement of equipment, of course, is something he likes. You know the reason.
In a field like health, you do not feel the impact of the interventions immediately. We will be able to see what happens to the health sector in Sri Lanka in 20 years time. Meanwhile, he will continue to take credit for the work done by decent people like Ranjith Atapattu and Renuka Herath. |

| The majority of these doctors are those who have just completed their internships and have got permanent appointments. Of them those getting postings in the NE and other remote areas are those who were amongst the lower scorers in their respective batches. The best are given postings in and around Colombo then to principle cities such as Kandy, Galle Matara Kalutara etc etc and the rest to the NE and the other areas. |
