With troops advancing towards the last Tamil Tiger bastion of Mullaittivu, Sri Lanka has put its Navy on alert to thwart any possible attempt by LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran to flee the island through sea route.

`The Sri Lankan Navy has been put on alert to prevent any attempt by LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran or other senior leaders from fleeing the country,` a senior defence official told PTI on Sunday.

The naval blockade has been imposed in northern Mullaittivu, the only remaining stronghold of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam after the fall of their de facto capital of Kilinochchi and the strategic Elephant Pass.

Earlier this month, Sri Lankan Army chief Sarath Fonseka said 54-year-old Prabhakaran may be hiding in the coastal town of Mullaittivu. Top commanders believe that he may now be confined in an area of 30 km radius in the embattled north, holed up in a bunker.

Navy spokesman Commander D.K.P. Dassanayake said that the Navy had laid a security net around the coast off Mullaitivu.

`We have our fast attack craft, speed boats, radars and other equipment keeping round-the-clock watch,` he told the state-run Independent Television Network.

The Navy`s defences had been laid in four rings along an area of 25 nautical miles off the coast, he said.

Dassanayake said the LTTE leader could try to flee the island with his wife and two children.

Last year, the Army added a special task force to supplement the four divisions that were engaged in attacking Mullaittivu, the headquarter of Sea Tigers.

For the misery he has caused to the tamils , I think tamils should stone him.

This selfish idiot, probably will not take cyanide though he forced every one under him.

Prof James Jupp- Australia says he is a pathological killer. He deserves the same in return

Why should this moron and his stinking brood try to escape - isn't he the one who has forced his cadres to commit suicide? So, shouldn't he set an example and use the cyanide capsule himself - unless he's not a Tiger after all - just another cowardly rat which are usually the first to leave a sinking ship !!! The Military should not just keep vigil on the possible sea escape route, but also check if any unidentified vessels are waiting close to the Sri Lankan waters for this purpose - and blow them up first. Also check what the Norwegians are upto in trying to help this mass murderer escape.

My guess is that Prabhakran will wear a saree and try to mix with the civilian population. He might fool the SL Army but the other civilians will catch him eventually and beat him to death! LOL!

He may trek on foot or by motor bike to the West coast, hide in Wilpathhu and escape abroad by sea or by air.He even might come south to a place like lahugala jungles and escape to another country. He necessarily haven't got to escape by Mullethive coast but from a place least expected.Corruption in the country will be to their advantage.
