Sri Lanka military launches air strikes against retreating rebels

Sri Lanka`s military have launched air attacks against the last remaining jungle hideouts of Tamil Tiger rebels after driving them out of their main strongholds, according to officials.
Helicopter gunships supported ground troops advancing deeper into the Mullaittivu region, where the retreating Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) forces are holed up, a military official said.
The defence ministry has said the security forces are ready to deal a `decisive blow` to the rebels after the capture of the strategic Elephant Pass on Friday.
Losing control of the pass was the latest in a series of defeats for the Tamil Tigers, who have been fighting since 1972 for a separate homeland.
Their main political headquarters of Kilinochchi was overrun by government troops earlier this month and the rebels are now confined to the jungle and lagoon district around Mullaittivu town on Sri Lanka`s northeast coast.
The leader of the Tiger rebels, Velupillai Prabhakaran, vowed in a radio broadcast late last year to fight on, and his guerrillas have frustrated government hopes of victory many times before.
But with the rebels appearing close to defeat, the army major general in charge of the assault on Kilinochchi said troops were now heading into the Mullaittivu jungles to `hunt down` Prabhakaran.
In the latest battlefield update, the army said it had captured airstrips from which the Tigers launched missions to bomb government targets using planes smuggled onto the island in pieces and re-assembled.
`The Sri Lankan army has so far captured four airstrips of the LTTE terrorists during the ongoing counter terrorist operations,` the ministry said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from weekend fighting, but officials said security forces have met with sporadic resistance following the fall of Kilinochchi after months of heavy fighting.
The LTTE has not commented on the latest military claims, but did accuse troops of directing artillery fire towards an internally displaced camp inside rebel-held Mullaittivu on Friday, killing one man and injuring four others.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse said in a New Year`s address that 2009 would be the year of `heroic victory` over the Tigers.

It is fun to hide in the jungle when day and night rains of MBRS, Artillery fire, as well as cluster bombs start falling from the sky.
Shocked and shattered LTTE brains who will run out of the jungle will have PTSD for the rest of their lives. |

Terrorist hideouts should be wiped with the same force as with the tsunami which (unluckily) hit our beautiful coastal areas some years back.
No human right organization, Ranil's UNP or any other LTTE butcher supporters in SL or Tamilnadu will find fault with the President of SRI LANKA or the Defense Chiefs for wiping out tiger terrorists & terrorism from the SRI LANKAN soil.
Anyway many questions arise:
* how is that our intelligence structure did not divulge the existence of 4 tiger airstrips? If the last 2.5 km long airstrip was not taken over by the SLDF, perhaps 'bigger international cargo planes could have landed with desperately needed weaponry for the tiger terrorists! Are there still other airstrips not yet found by the SLDF?
* how is that so far nobody has any solid information about the hideouts of 'top' tiger terrorists?
* how is that the radio broadcast of the tiger leader could not be located to the place of its origin? (one can say that it was aired from a mobile transmitter?)
* how is that so far the SLDF has not found any evidence of the 'flying tin cans' of the so-called 'tiger air force'?
* how is that so far the SLDF has not found huge caches of arms except for some guns, grenades, walkie-talkies of no significant military values?
HOW IS THAT NO TIGER TERRORIST SPOKESMEN ARE AVAILABLE FOR THEIR LOSSES & GREAT VICTORIES OF THE SLDF???
NADESAN, ILANTHIRIEN ETC. ARE SPEECHLESS THESE DAYS! HOW COME???
