Some opposition parties in Sri Lanka have joined to say that the prevailing situation in the country is a huge threat to democracy.

Speaking at a special press conference chaired by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in Colombo this morning, opposition party leaders described the assassination of the well-known Chief Editor of the Sunday Leader, Lasantha Wickramathunga, as the end of the country s democracy.

Speaking to the media, the Opposition Leader demanded that the government seek support from international intelligence agencies to investigate the murder, as well as the recent attack on the MTV/MBC station complex.

Chairman of the People s Faction of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera, said that the people do not trust the local police as they have failed to arrest any suspects in the assassination of Lasantha Wickramathunga.

Also speaking at the press briefing, leader of the New Left Front Wickramabahu Karunarathna said that the country is in danger as the government is unable to prevent attacks on democracy.

The opposition leaders urged the people to join hands with them to protect the country and its democracy .
