After the opening of A9 road and the fall of Elephant Pass, the LTTE is virtually trapped in a corner mainly within the Mullaitivu district. The LTTE is facing the brunt from seven divisions of the Sri Lanka Army, i.e. 55 and 53 Divisions of the Northern front, 58, 57, 59, Task Force 03 and 04 from the Vanni front.
At the moment 53 and 55 Divisions commanded by Brigadiers Kamal Gunaratne and Prasanna de Silva respectively are heading towards south from Elephant Pass while troops attached to the 58 Division commanded by Brigadier Shavendra Silva is moving towards East with the capture of Murasumoddai late last week.
The 57 division, commanded by Major General Jagath Dias, heads towards the East targeting Mullaitivu. Presently 57 Division is located in Iranamadu with the Iranamadu Tank being the boundary.
Task Force 03 Commanded by Brigadier Sathyapriya Liyanage operates from the Ampakamam East directed towards the Mullaitivu area. Task Force 04, commanded by Colonel Nishantha Wanniarachchi located North of Oddusudan lies in the South West direction of the 59 Division.
The 59 Division commanded by Brigadier Nandana Udawatta is directly aiming at Mullaitivu, lying in the Mulliyawalai area South of Mullaitivu. With these developments, the Sri Lanka Navy has increased their defence in depth in support of the progressing ground troops.
Covering the areas immediately close to the coastal line, the Navy small attack craft patrol continuously while the Offshore patrol vessels monitor and safeguard the deep sea. Another line of Navy craft are patrolling in between these two lines in order to fully secure the waters from fleeing LTTE cadres and other infiltrators.
In support of the ground troops Sri Lanka Air Force continues their sorties towards LTTE defences and strategically important locations of the terrorists.

This problem is still far from the end.
But, now Sri lankan can expect some significant level of weakness in LTTE power. So, it may be the time that moderate Tamil people are coming to politics. |

'Militarily, ups and downs are there,' the Army commander, who ordered the pull-out on April 21 said.
The return of King Kanakacuriyan
By Peter Schalk
When in December 1995 the Lankan forces captured Yalppanam, President Cantirika celebrated the event as if it was a famous repetition of a historical event - the taking of Yapa Patuna (Yalppanam) by Canpakap Perumal (Sapumal Kumaraya).
Canpakap Perumal was the adopted son of Parakramabahu VI (1411-66), and he was installed in about 1450 as King in Yapa Patuna, at a time when the autonomous Kingdom of Yalppanam under the Tamil King Kanakacuriyan was weakened. The place name Yapa Patuna is connected with the establishment of Lankan rule in Yapa Patuna through Sapumal Kumaraya. Later he became King of Kotte under the name of Bhuvanekabahu VI (1469-77). He chose a political involvement that brought him to the Sinhala side against the interest of Tamilar who were loyal to the separate and independent Kingdom of Yalppanam.
.....
.........
On November 27, 1995, Tiru Veluppillai Pirpakaran made a speech in connection with Great Heroes Day. At that time the lion flag had already been hoisted over Yalppanam. He reacted very emotionally as can be expected. The following is an official translation by the LTTE of a part of his speech.
'The Sinhala military devils may hoist victory flags in depopulated Jaffna which has been reduced to rubble. The Sinhala chauvinistic gangs in the South may light crackers in jubilation assuming that they have captured the kingdom of Jaffna. Chandrika may send peace signals believing that military hegemony has been achieved. In these circumstances we wish to make it absolutely clear that as long as the Sinhala army is occupying Jaffna the doors for peace will be firmly closed. The LTTE will not participate in the peace negotiations imposed at the point of a gun subjecting itself to military pressure. This is the message we wish to address to Chandrika regime. It will be nothing other than political stupidity if Chandrika government thinks that it can bring about peace and political settlement by occupying Jaffna and uprooting hundreds of thousands of people. The invasion of Jaffna is a gigantic historical blunder made by Chandrika regime. As a consequence of this act the Colombo government has closed all avenues for peace and plunged the entire island into grave conflictual situation.'
With the capture of Elephant Pass, Sri Lanka's most fortified Army Camp, the LTTE appears to have won a crucial victory in the battle for Jaffna.

VP is there... his son is there... they get to Tamilnet all the information from Vanni...
VP must be credited for not allowing his forces to use all the ferocious weapons, including WMDs... VP did this goodwill gesture, despite demands from some Tamils and diaspora to use them, to comply with international norms, UN, EU, etc... Thus, IC must acknowledge his good will act!
