The 45 members belonging to the main opposition UNP walked out of parliament yesterday saying it would not participate in any debates in the future.
The walkout resulted after the government repeatedly insisted that the UNP-sponsored no-confidence motion be taken up yesterday.
Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Micheal Perera said that as this was a motion introduced by the UNP, the debate should be held on a date agreed by the UNP.
Mr. Perera was responding to Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara who directed that the debate should be taken up yesterday.
No-confidence motions must be given preference over the other business of the House. I tried my best to work out a compromise between the government and the UNP on it. It was impossible. So, I decided to place the motion in Friday s order paper, the Speaker said.
Our party wanted this motion to be taken up today and concluded on the third week of January. The government did not agree to it. It wanted to take up today and conclude the debate this week itself. Our MPs are out on various other duties. I cannot bring them to parliament this week as a result, he said.
Mr. Perera said motion should be debated on a date agreed to by the party introducing the motion.
Don t ignore our rights. You have no right to determine the date without our consent, he told the Speaker.
However, House Leader and senior Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva also insisted that the debate be taken up yesterday and said it was a business of the House, and not that of the opposition.
Mr. de Silva said the UNP was afraid to participate in the debate, and therefore it tried to avoid it.
We are challenging the UNP to come and participate in this debate. MPs should give priority to their parliamentary business. They cannot excuse themselves by pleading other work, he said.

| The irony is that no one has any confidence in the opposition! Unless they elect a more effective leader, Sri Lankans don't have a proper democratic alternative. Even the poor chap Wickrematunga who got shot yesterday said that because opposition is so ineffective, journalists have to do the opposition's job, and look what happened to him. |

| The elected parlimentary opposition must take part in the parlimentary process and take part in its procedures and voice the opinions of the people who elected them. Otherwise the entire democratic process can be destroyed. More than any other time in the history of Sri Lanka politicians of all the parties must ensure that the parlimenatary system of government prevails especially when Army is getting more and more powerful and the generals are becoming more vocal in their opinions. A military government is a not too distant possibility if politicians do not end their petty bickering. |

UNP has lost another opportunity to put the government on the defensive, though they may have reason to protest the Speaker's decision.
No way the UNP could have got the no-confidence motion passed. So why walk out and miss the chance to expose the government and score some badly needed points? Silly UNP. Plain stupid. |

| Sounds like this turned into a non-confidence vote towards the opposition, alias United Non-sense Party. |

Stupid Joseph Michael was Dudley Senanayake's Driver.
This idiot's party says they have NO Confidence in the Govt but the UNP MP's have more important matter's!
If the UNP(Traitor Ranil Faction) has no Confidence in the Govt. seems like the priority should be to pass the No Confidence motion.
But Stupid Joseph M Perera says UNP MP's have more important duties!!
This means the No Confidence motion is less important to the UNP which means the UNP actually has confidence in the Govt.
Also, UNP is going against their own UNP speaker WJM Lokubandara....
Lokubandara was elected via UNP Votes!
Hooooo! Hoooooo!

| Lol.. UNP should do more than this in order for them to come into power.. walking out of the parliament will not help them... they should really look into their party reforms.. and keeping people like Mangala or SB will not do them any good,.. |

Not walk out ov the Parliament but walk oput of the party and let
intelligent people take over.
They are like little children crying, waliking out, protesting,
lying etc. when they know they are wrong.HShould give them a good spanking! Ranil may like it though. |
