Troops of the 53 and 55 divisions yesterday captured the Pallai town situated along the A9 road between Muhamalai and Elephant Pass, the military said.
It said that during the ceasefire period the LTTE established its offices and training camps and moved artillery guns and heavy mortars to Pallai once a thriving coconut plantation which bordered a railway station.

The military said according to evidence collected by the troops the Pallai area had served as a major terrorist hub and that the LTTE had used the location to attack targets in Jaffna.

It said that columns of battle-hardened troops, of the 53-division commanded by Brigadier Kamal Guneratne and troops of the 55-division commanded by Brigadier Prasanna Silva overran the LTTE forward defence line in Muhamalai on Tuesday and advanced southward at dawn on Wednesday.

The south-bound troops moved along both sides of the A-9 Highway on Wednesday afternoon.

Troops came under heavy enemy gunfire, but the troops retaliated and fought fearlessly while forging ahead, the military added.

It said that several key LTTE area command centers, including the Kilali ECHO-9 base, GOLF-7 Muhamalai area command base, ECHO-3 base and DELTA-2 base were destroyed and brought under the troops control by Wednesday evening.

Artillery fire by the advancing troops also set ablaze a huge LTTE ammunition dump, emitting huge columns of smoke into the skies. A large cache of weapons and armaments, kept hidden and sealed inside concrete underground bunkers were located by the troops. On Wednesday, 58-division troops entered the Murasumoddai Town perimeter while battle formations of the 58-division which continued their offensive marched further eastwards after capturing Paranthan before entering Murasumoddai town despite stiff resistance put up by the LTTE during the past few days, the military said.

The Defence Ministry said gaining control over the Murasumoddai junction, located along the Paranthan -- Mullattivu main road (A-35), five km east of Paranthan, and would be strategically vital for the troops as it created new escape routes for Tamil civilians held by the LTTE.

The Murasumoddai junction has direct access routes to Kilinochchi, Vaddakachchi, Uriyan areas.

During recent days many civilians from Murasumoddai and its surrounding area had entered government-controlled areas.
