Did their death serve any purpose?
Was there any conversation or even a thought of devolving powers before the conflict started?
Will the govt have acknowledged that Tamils had actual grievances?
Who made these real issues?
Not you, its the people who sacrificed their lives and freedom.
So yes, although terrible and bitter their lives were not in vain. |

GrassT,
What do you want me to say? I spent plenty of time today exchanging my outrage and views with someone from LNP (through direct e-mail). I feel the same way I felt after Sivaram was killed. In his case, I actually knew him. You brought up Jews in Gaza Territory. One sentence. The Hamas-led administration was stupid enough (for the 2nd time) to pick a fight with Israel. No one can do anything about it. It is the fate of Palestinians to be slaughtered like cattle, every few years. We can't do anything! And Sri Lanka gets its lethal weaponry from Israel in its war against the LTTE as well. That is the reality we have to live with. No one cares.

These are ORDINARY PEOPLE on the run as refugees! Not the armed fighters who knew the risks. After the death of over 40,000 people like this, after 25 years have gone by, with nothing really to show, you are telling me that their 'lives were not in vain'? Why don't you go to Vanni and convey the same messaege to them?

I see the hidden hand of the JVP in this editors killing . These pigs will resort to anything . anybody who lived through the late 80's cant attest .
I cant see any reason why the govt would want to sully its name when every thing is going its way .
Who ever did it deserves condemnation and more .

LTTE killed Lasantha
If actually the LTTE is responsible, it just shows how dangerous the LTTE is still, as 8 LTTE cadres were able to come on 4 motorcycles in broad daylight in a suburb of Colombo armed to their teeth passing several military checkpoints and do what ever they wanted and have been able to get away unscathed!

AndyPrem,
Who ever did it deserves condemnation and more .
Yes, I couldn't agree more.
I am really upset about what happened to Lasatha Wickematunge. He knew the risks. He could have taken an easier path like others did. He wasn't just critical of the power center in Colombo. Mr. Wickrematunga was equally critical of the Tigers also. I had the fortune to meet with the late Tharmaratnam Sivaram ('Tharaki') few times. He was a brilliant analyst as well as a good writer. The best military analyst Sri Lanka ever had, in my opinion. He didn't look at this war from a purely military perspective, he looked at it from strategic, social and economic angles. He even gave a presentation to the Pentagon at their request, few years ago. But during his last visit to the US, he sounded very depressed. He already had threats against his life. Yet, he wanted to be with his people despite the US government's offer for him stay here! During the last few months of his life, Tharaki was became critical of the Tigers as well (for 'falling into the peace trap' during the CFA period). And then, he crossed path with Karuna (with both coming from Batticaloa). The blame for his death finally fell on PLOTE. Many people suspected that it was Karuna's men. Tharaki knew a lot of people. He also knew too much, much to the dislike of some in Sri Lanka. All the talented minds either leaving Sri Lanka, or eliminated one by one if they chose to stay. - Yarlan

Particularly, the liberation of the LTTE stronghold of Kilinochchi can be considered as the final phase in the war against Tamil Tigers
Confirmation that the war has ended. Why are the armed forces still in North? Fighting against the rest of the Tamils? |
