MR was not elected through 'free' elections. Minority vote needs to be more free and 'seen' to be so than majority. Hence it was not an democratic election - but a controlled appointment.
From the point of view of seeing some 'structure' this might have been considered a good outcome by VP. With Ranil as president, democratic Tamils were likely to have diluted their support for armed struggle. This would have demoted LTTE's position within the community.
Neither is democratic. They needed each other to defeat each other. MR stands defeated in democracy by defeating VP in Killinochi - through military power. In a democracy - you need to not raise your weapons except in defence.

You know whats mess, as much as i hate US, since sri lanka is allied with china and paki, US elected Obama is interested allies with tamil eelam to give bigger boost economy to south india...
he might have the right to seperate the land since he voted one of either country for red alert...
hey US is the only country so far that has seperated countries !!
