Sri Lanka troops 'seize rebel HQ'
Breaking News
Sri Lanka's military has seized control of the Tamil Tiger rebels' de facto capital of Kilinochchi, President Mahinda Rajapakse has announced.
He described the taking of the northern town - which has followed months of fighting - as an 'unparalleled victory' for government forces.
There has been no immediate comment from the Tamil Tigers.
The BBC's correspondent in Sri Lanka says the loss of Kilinochchi will be a heavy blow to the rebel group.
The town is of huge symbolic importance to the Tigers, who have assembled the trappings of a separate state they want for the ethnic Tamil minority, he says.
'We should pay the gratitude of the whole nation to those heroic soldiers who achieved that victory,' Mr Rajapaksa said in a nationally televised address.
He urged the rebel fighters to lay down their arms.
The Sri Lankan army has for months been advancing towards Kilinochchi, which has been in the hands of rebels for the last decade.
Both sides have recently claimed to have inflicted heavy casualties on each other in the north of the island.
But there have been no independent reports from the frontline and it is impossible to verify either account of casualties. |

The people jumping up and down here do not understand the feelings of Eelam Tamils....
I agree, eelam tamils are very upset and sad cause they lost thier capitol and the capital.
The Eelam Tamils have whole heartedly embraced VP for 30 years. They are not about to abandon and embrace MR!
I'm asking about the 100 year plan... and how VP is going to lead to the 100 years. :)))
Now, VP got his diplomatic skilled sharpened, the next big war will be not fought in Vanni, it will be fought in UN at New York!
Agree, LTTE will send a human bomb to NY and get listed in the UN as a terror organization. |

Velu said that SLA will never capture Kilinochci. What he hinted was 'We will run for life and SLA will just step in'
Poor diaspora thought otherwise and paid more kappam.
Now be happy. No more kappam is needed to satisfy oily pig.

Sri Lanka retakes former rebel capital
cnn, 2-2-2009. COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- Sri Lankan troops recaptured the former seat of the Tamil Tiger rebel movement after days of heavy fighting, military officials said Friday. Sri Lankan military spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara addresses reporters in Colombo on Friday.
The loss of the northern city of Kilinochchi is the latest in a series of reversals for the rebels, who have fought for an independent ethnic Tamil state for 25 years. News of the victory prompted celebrations in Colombo and other cities.
There was no immediate response from the Tamil Tigers.
The Tigers ran a parallel administration from Kilinochchi with their own 'police force, courts, prisons and taxes, and had declared government plans to retake the city a 'daydream.' But after Sri Lanka launched a new offensive against the rebels in the fall, the rebels moved their nerve center and logistics bases to Mullaitivu on the northeastern coast.
The recapture of Kilinochchi follows that of the 'notorious' Iranamadu junction just south of Kilinochchi on Thursday, and the capture of the town Paranthan, four kilometers (2.5 miles) away, on Wednesday, according to the military. |

Nice sinhalayan drama,, only difference is, this time staged by the chief of all madayans!
only one thing the sinhalayans did not do so far to impress the IC,,, is killing or capturing a dead/alive dummy VP!
this capturing kili or an announcement about capturing kili is NOTHING in terms of politics or military or for that matter relating to a solution but to impress the IC or to borrow more money, or to stop the IC pressure or to consolidate the vote banks, or to boost the morale of the sinhalayans, so they will ignore the down turn of the economy or to hide the paksas robbery!
note the word here: NOTHING!
