TN parties vying with each other to oppose Lankan offensive

The ruling DMK today announced that it would be organising a public meeting here on October 6 to express solidarity with the 'suffering Sri Lankan Tamils'. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi would address the meeting.

The move, apparently, was to counter the CPI's plan to observe a fast here on the issue on October 2. Volunteers of the AIADMK and the DMDK would participate in the fast, to be headed by CPI National Secretary D Raja.

Commenting on CPI not extending invitation to DMK to take part in the fast, Karunanidhi said Sri Lankan Tamils were well aware of those who had supported them during hard times.

The CPI knew that his party, right from its inception, had been supporting the cause of ethnic Tamils, he said adding 'Hence, they might have thought of not inviting us and had invited only those who had been opposing the just demands of Sri Lankan Tamils and those who had been extending 'half hearted' support to their cause.'

Sri Lankan Tamils knew who were really supporting them and those who offered lip sympathy, he said.

It was the DMK in 1985, which asked its MLAs to resign from the state Assembly and could gather over seven lakh people in a day's time to conduct a rally, he said adding his government was dismissed by the Centre for supporting the Lankan Tamils in 1991.

Karunanidhi said, 'There is nothing new to be explained by the DMK on the (Lankan) issue. I had already explained our stand in the assembly. I only hope that the leaders, who will be participating in the fast, will speak on the resolution passed by the state Assembly on April 23 last.'

Volunteers of the AIADMK, MDMK and DMDK would be participating in the CPI fast, as CPI State Secretary D Pandiyan had invited them for the protest.

Getting together of the leaders of the Left parties, AIADMK, MDMK and the DMDK was being seen by political observers as a prelude to an alliance for the Lok Sabha polls.

But, DMDK leader and Tamil actor Vijaykanth had stated that its participation in the fast was only to express their support for the Sri Lankan Tamils and had nothing to do with any alliance.
