The 573 Brigade also made another startling discovery today that also relates to the 'Tiger Air Force'. They discovered a runway in the north of Mankulam, to the western side. The actual location is Pannikkankulam. This became the first LTTE/TAF runway ever captured by troops.

The runway was measured at 500m by 50m and was never before observed by air or land. In fact the discovery came as a complete surprise. The Army now believes there maybe other such runways hidden in areas ahead of them.

Speaking about the ongoing humanitarian mission to liberate the masses of North from the tyranny of LTTE terrorists, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that the Government has reached the final stage of the war against LTTE terrorism.

Airing his views to the BBC World Service, the Defence Secretary said that the troops are only 4.5 kms away from the LTTE heartland, Kilinochchi.

A confident Defence Secretary said that the continuous and historic victories of the Security Forces will soon bring an end to the war signifying a landmark in the history of the country's three decade long crisis.

Clarifying the Government's position which led the INGOs and NGOs to request to vacate from the LTTE held areas in Kilinochchi, the Defence Secretary said the Government did not want to risk the lives of any relief activists as the troops are advancing into enemy territory and because there is fierce fighting in the battle front.
He said that terrorism has been a menace to the civilians of Sri Lanka irrespective of race, religion or ethnicity.

Clean all your Dirtiness by bathing in ' Beira lake '

You only know about Baira Lake. We usually have running water ssytems to all homes in Colombo and other cities. Where there are no such systems, there are wells to each of the house.

Unlike India, people here do not bath in public ponds in the city.

Heard of the Garbage mountain in COlombo which SLAF had to bomb ?
Sri Lanka's biggest garbage mountain, growing in height day by day, at Bloemendhal Road, Colombo 13 has become a menace. It could explode if fire spreads to the methane gas emanating from the lower levels of the dump, the Colombo Municipal Council Public Health Department warned yesterday.

A recent fire in a section of the dump had aggravated an already bad health hazard, residents of the area complained yesterday (26).

The Colombo Municipal Council Public Health Department warned that the mountain of garbage was burning from inside even after the Sri Lanka Air Force had doused the flames engulfing its surface.

The garbage mountain stands on a wetland of 22 acres and about 70 80 tons of the city's garbage are dumped regularly.
The stench emanating from the dump after the fire is unbearable, residents complain.

Director of the Disaster Relief Services Centre Nimal Hettiarachchi said there had been a fire last year as well and that 43 houses had been completely damaged by it. The Centre had donated Rs. 50,000 to put up temporary shelters for the victims. He said those who were living in the vicinity of the garbage mountain were squatters.

He said there were around 10,000 families living in the area adjacent to the garbage dump while around 1,500 families were living quite close to it. They were reluctant to leave the area for various reasons, he said.

The CMC fire department, too, attempted to douse the fire and one of its fire fighting vehicles had got stuck in the dump.

The CMC has issued notice on the company responsible for dumping garbage at Bloemandhal to clear it up as soon as possible.

However, residents say the CMC should go beyond issuing notices and find a long term solution before the Mount Garbage explode destroying lives and causing irreparable damage to environment.
