Is East Fully 'Liberated' by Modapakshe ?
The LTTE seems to have increased its activities during the past few months in the east, a little more than one year since the region was liberated from them.
Despite the initial euphoria of having cleared the east, the LTTE activities in the region have shown a marked increase during recent times. The government claimed that it had chased away the LTTE from the east and also had several celebrations last year to commemorate the 'victory.'
At least four incidents of attacks on security forces had been reported on some of the pro-Tiger websites since September 24. The latest attack was said to have been carried out on a mini camp in Batticaloa last Sunday (28), according to pro-Tiger sites.
These attacks however have not been reported in the government defence websites. The fact however is that the LTTE has not been totally wiped out from the east and are active though not as before.
It seems that the Tigers have started an insurgency in the east.
The type of democracy that has been introduced in the east is far from ideal. It must however be noted that it is not easy to change the whole system overnight. The government also cannot afford to be complacent that the TMVP is now in charge of the east and everything is normal |
