Upstate NY man gets time served for smuggling

Tuesday, 30 September 2008 - 2:45 PM SL Time

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A Sri Lankan man living in upstate New York has been sentenced to time served, about seven months, for smuggling people from Canada into the United States by boat.

Mohanraj Selvarajah will likely face deportation following Monday`s sentencing in federal court in Buffalo.

According to court papers, the 48-year-old Lockport resident told investigators he was given $5,000 to buy a boat in September 2007 and was told he would be paid more to smuggle three people into the United States.

He was arrested after a witness spotted him dropping people off at a Buffalo boat launch and called authorities.

Selvarajah`s lawyer says he will likely be returned to Sri Lanka alone, while his wife and three children remain in Canada, where they moved after his arrest.

There is a number of things wrong with the world we live in today. It seems as time progresses on, that the moral value of people s decisions are slowly evaporating away. Since our way of thinking has changed completely since the good old days of the 1950 s, crime rates have risen drastically. The reason many people are doing illegal things is because our social society has become so twisted that people think that it is okay to so wrong things.

Hi Achillies, Robin, berty,

This smuggling is not right. This is enterprising person is selfishness on the part of this Tamil person.

If you are into smuggling, then the Tamils & Sinhalese all must get together and do joint smuggling.

Otherwise it is not right.
Then no problem & who is there to criticise...

Unite to smuggle.
