The European Union has condemned a grenade attack on the home of a Sri Lankan lawyer and human rights and anti-corruption activist and urged the government to bring the perpetrators to justice.
'The EU notes with concern the trend in attacks and threats on journalists, civil society organizations and now a lawyer,' it said in a statement.
It said the attack on Saturday night on the residence of J C Weliamuna, executive director of Transparency International Sri Lanka, an anti-corruption watchdog, may have been connected with his work.
An unexploded grenade was also found in Weliamuna's residence.
'Although there is no indication on the reasons or on the perpetrators of this attack, it is assumed that the attack may have been against the important human rights and anti corruption work Mr.Weliamuna was involved in,' the EU said.
'We believe it is important that the essential work of civil society organisations such as that of Transparency International Sri Lanka should be supported and that its representative and staff are safeguarded.'
The attack was the latest in a series of attacks and threats against civil society groups, human rights activists and journalists who highlight government corruption and human rights abuses.

20's game highly placed around all round performance..therefore Kandamby is a good selection.
Yes. Also others like Jeewantha Kulatunge and Indika deSaram should be in our T20 team - they are better hitters than Chamara Silva and Dilshan. In an ideal T20 batting lineup I would like to see the above 3 join Sanath, Sanga and Mahela as the top 6 batters. |

Chennai, though you have ambitions for Murali he doesn't wanna be captain, he is a team player, he loves to bowl, if possible continuously from one end he will bowl through a whole match.

The only regret Murali will be having abt cricket he was not allowed to captain even a Single Match....
Legends are not to be treated Shabbily like this anywhere in world...
When even Mediocres like Pottapattu could captain Sorrylanka, Murali should have been given More than a match to captain a International match.

yes it was..but there is a reason..Money ..exceptional amount of money..if the SLCB does not get any money from IPL and they have a duty to pay these contracted players, it should be accepted..
let us say your working for your company..suddenly your company wants to deal with urgent issue..(let us say current financial crisis) to forget other duties..ru going to refuse..well if you refuse you will be replaced with someone else
We always get minimum number of tour marches etc when touring. Early summer conditions also do not help us.
hey look at our schedule..we don't have much test matches to play in 2009
Why do we need to fit in to their requirement? We can tour late summer.
Oh England has their own schedule, that is the only time they can fit in our tour
