The Tamil Nadu government is set to expedite the premature release of Nandini Murugan, who was sentenced to death for her role in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi indicated Thursday.

`The advisory board of Vellore prison will asked to reconsider its recommendations on the application for premature release by Nalini which will be considered on merits to arrive at a decision according to our laws,` Karunanidhi wrote in the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam newspaper Murasoli.

Legal sources told IANS on conditions of anonymity that Karunanidhi`s statement simply meant that the government would ask the newly constituted advisory panel to recommend the release and accede to her request.

The Madras High Court struck down the government order rejecting Nalini`s plea for premature release Wednesday saying the improperly constituted advisory panel`s recommendations were wrong.

Nalini Murugan, alias Sriharan, who had accompanied the suicide bomber Dhanu to the election rally in Sriperumbudur where Gandhi was killed in May 1991, had sought her release saying she had spent more than the mandatory maximum 14 years in jail.

Nalini, her husband and former Tamil Tiger guerrilla Murugan and two others were sentenced to death for their role in the killing of Gandhi.

The Madras High Court had upheld Nalini`s plea for clemency on a technicality and on the basis of an earlier ruling of the Supreme Court, which said that both the parents of a child should not be put to death. Her death penalty was later commuted to life sentence.

Rajiv Gandhi`s daughter Priyanka met Nalini in Vellore jail and said she wanted to understand for herself what made Nalini and her colleagues act in the way they did and said she wanted to `make peace` with the past.

Nalini had delivered a girl Megara - presently studying in Britain - in prison in 1992.

This is the mistake of many countries. they must not release these people and allow move freely. Neither society nor these people will have any good. Only US has the right law. If one involves in killing, most likely their punishment is also the same!

Buddhism did not say that.
'Buddhisma is based on Karma. 'should you do bad, you will suffer'
This is against buddhism. In fact if this woman again kill someone, relaeasing people sould face the Karma

President Mahinda Rajapaksa saying a few words in faulty Tamil at the United Nations is all a lot of farce when the country he heads is caught in communal chaos. Tamils want to be treated as full-fledged citizens of Sri Lanka, nothing less for it is their right.

I think Nalini should be pardoned.

For Rajiv Gandhi murder LTTE and Prabakaran should also be pardoned.

It is none of them who did it.

Rajiv Gandhi Murder was paid and asked for by Tamil racists. They should never be pardoned.

Tamils have been hiding behind LTTE and brainwashing Prabakaran. It is Tamil racists who are responsible for Rajiv Murder.

Tamils need to provoke the Sinhalese. Steal from the Sinhalese. Forcibly occupy their land. Sue them for racism for any real or perceived injury. Hang the Eelam flag at your residence, and openly declare your support for the LTTE and Eelam. Refuse to accept the jurisdiction of any Sri Lankan government agency, as your leaders are in Eelam. Stop paying the taxes that go towards keeping the North alive. Continuously use government-provided amenities like free health, free education, subsidized fuel etc, all the while abusing the government.

People like Nalini and Paraba should not be punished.

The Karma will take care of that.

By releasing them you show your strength.

Weak can never forgive. Strong can.

On April 10, 2002, Tiger Supremo Prabakaran met the international press at Kilinochchi, located in the Wanni region of Sri Lanka. Many questions related to Rajiv Gandhi's murder.

Q: You have been indicted in the Gandhi assassination? Prabakaran: This case is going on. Four persons have been convicted. They are seeking amnesty at the moment. We do not want to make any comments at this moment.

Q: Are you denying involvement in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination?

A: (Mr Balasingham). I know this is a sensitive issue, not only for you but for us as well. You are raising an issue that happened 10 years ago. We want to have friendly relations with India.

Q: What have you to say about the charges? Prabakaran: This is a 'tragic incident' that took place 10 years back. We cannot comment on the issue.

Q: The Rajiv Gandhi assassination ...

A: (Mr Balasingham) You are trying to dominate the press conference. You have come here when the peace process is on. You are talking of an old incident. Do not dig into the past.

At this press conference, it must be noted that Prabakaran did not deny involvement in the assassination, opening the floodgates of positive confirmation.

Recently, Nirupama Subramaniam, an Indian woman journalist who earlier represented the Indian Express and who at present represents The Hindu of Madras, was asked by the Sunday Observer on June 16, 2002:

Q: What impression have you formed of Velupillai Prabakharan?

A: He successfully led his cadres but led his people into ruin. I have not interviewed him, but I was at Killinochchi and the press conference seemed like a huge ordeal of logistical problems, security checks and catching deadlines. But you can put it down to valuable experience as to how the LTTE conduct themselves and relate to the outside world. I found it most surprising that they were not prepared for the most obvious questions from the lots of Indians present. When the question about Rajiv Gandhi was asked, they went into a huddle and it seemed like ages before they came out with a response and that they didn't want to comment on it because it was sub judice. But it was really post judice as the convictions had been handed out. As long as Prabhakaran was in shadows, the Indian public seemed to have forgotten him. But his sudden appearance on Indian TV screens brought the whole issue up front again.

After Prabakaran's press conference, G Parthasarathy, who was earlier an information adviser to Rajiv Gandhi and the spokesman of the Indian Peace Keeping Forces in Sri Lanka, in a cover story of Frontline, the Indian fortnightly magazine, April 27-May 10, said, 'There appears to be little doubt that it was the inaction on the part of the V P Singh government in responding to this act of terrorism on Indian soil that emboldened Prabakaran to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.'
