Tamils of India have their own well-defined Tamil state. Tamil is the official language of the Tamil Nadu state and Tamil is the national language of India. India has too many languages to accomodate all of them as the official language, that s why they created the linguistic states.
It allows every Indian to develop and protect their own language and culture in their respective states and to be a proud Indian. Unlike the Sri Lankan Tamil, a Tamil of India doesn't need to worry about losing his Tamil identity or his language.
