Anyway, In this day and age, we should be able to be religious and be able to worship our religious figures in privacy. Need for ever larger and ever colorful figures means that we are somehow drifting away from the true meaning of being religious.

I never heard such a pep talk in my life. It is even more hypocritical when it comes from a Sinhala Buddhist. These are the people deliberately planting the Buddha statues everywhere even in the historic holiest temples of Sri Lankan Tamils.

They built a huge cement Buddha statue to block the view of historic Koneswaram Temple. They even planted a Buddha Statue in the middle of fish market to claim that area to the Sinhala Buddhists in Thirukonamalai. They refused to obey the judicial request of removing the illegal Buddha Statue.

The Sinhalese brought the Buddha to a level which they could understand. In Sri Lanka, the Buddha Statues are used as tool for ethnic cleansing and colonizing the historic habitation of the Tamil speaking people. The Sinhala Buddha seems to have taken the innate evil character of the Sinhalese.

That is my personal view. I started by saying that. All what you say may be true. The cause for all that is what I tried to explain as I see it. Why would I need the biggest and shiniest Buddha statue to be a Buddhist ? It does not work that way.
Remember what Karl Marx said...

'Religion is the Opium of the people' or something ?

This is probably what he meant :)
