Pakistan Cricket into Deeper Crisis

Tuesday, 2 September 2008 - 2:07 PM SL Time

Financial cloud over series
Pakistan`s proposed tri-series has been hit by further problems after the tournament failed to attract interest from sponsors.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced last week that Pakistan would play in a tournament hosted by South Africa, with Sri Lanka as the third team, which is set to compensate for the postponed Champions Trophy. However, no TV broadcaster has shown any interest yet.

But the International Cricket Committee of the PCB have accused PCB chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi of acting unilaterally in planning the tournament, especially since the PCB currently has no chairman.

The committee will decide whether to approve Pakistan`s participation in the tournament at an emergency meeting on Wednesday.

But Naghmi, who denied acting independently, is still hopeful the tournament will be staged despite the recent financial setback.

`CSA (Cricket South Africa) will take its time before finalising the project because we are aware a lot of hard work has to be done to host such events,` Naghmi told the News.

And while Sri Lanka had initially agreed to play in the tournament, doubts also remain over their participation.

`In case Sri Lanka decide against playing, then Pakistan and South Africa will play each other in a series of five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches,` Naghmi added.

Triangular one-day series announced
South Africa will host Pakistan and Sri Lanka in a triangular one-day series next month, said the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The series was arranged at the request of the PCB who wanted to fill the void left by the postponement of the Champions Trophy, which should have taken place in September bu was put back 13 months by the International Cricket Council because of security concerns.

'Cricket South Africa are finalising plans for a tri-series for us,' PCB chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi told reporters.

'It would be played a few weeks after the South African team return from their tour of England.'

The PCB had hoped to convince India to participate in the tournament, but those efforts failed after the Board of Control for Cricket in India said they would rather use the break to prepare for the four-Test series against Australia.

'We are not thinking of taking part in any event,' BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said.

'We want to hold a preparatory camp for the players ahead of the important series against Australia,' he said.

Pakistan have not played a Test match at home this year and have been starved of international cricket because of the political turmoil in the country.

Australia pulled out of a scheduled series in March citing safety concerns, while New Zealand also cancelled a three-match one-day series which was scheduled to be held just before the Champions Trophy.
