Army moves into Mallavi town

By Sunil Jayasiri
The Army yesterday moved into the strategically important Mallavi town West of Mankulam amid heavy resistance by the LTTE, defence sources said.

The 573 Brigade under the command of Major General Jagath Dias, General Officer Commanding of the 57 Division, entered Mallavi town around 5:30 p.m.

Military sources said there had been heavy resistance from the Tigers on Saturday but they had gradually withdrawn by yesterday afternoon. The troops laid siege to the Mallavi town for several days following the capture of Thunukkai a week ago.

Military sources said the Tigers had constructed

heavy defences including an earth bund on the outskirts of the town to stop the army onslaught and with the capture of Mallavi the military has cleared the Tunukkai-Mallavi supply route used by the LTTE. The Army is now only about 13 kilometres away from the Jaffna-Kandy A9 main road.

With the fall of Mallavi the LTTE had also lost an important hospital used by it to treat wounded cadres.

This strategically important town which was the 3rd most populated area after Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu had been mainly used by the Tigers as an administrative base and was also known as little Geneva because of the number of INGO offices which were situated in the town. It was at the Mallavi town that the ICRC handed over the bodies of Tiger cadres to the LTTE.

Emphasizing the importance of capturing Mallavi in the battle against the LTTE, defence sources said on several occasions LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran had used the town as a hideout.

Berty, bro:

Hope you are doing fine... How is HK?

I have not seen Sinthaka and his buddy Captain after Trinco SLN HQ disaster. Wonder if they went to hiding or got kicked out by Mr. B.
