The rebel air wing, though largely incapable of causing serious damage, is a source of pride for the Tamil Tigers and one of deep frustration for the military, which has been unable to stop the attacks by the lightweight, hard-to-track aircraft.
Government forces wrested Trincomalee from rebel control last year. In May, a suspected rebel suicide diver attacked and sank an empty navy cargo ship in the harbor.
Tuesday's attack took place after weeks of military advances deep into rebel-held territory in the jungles of the north. Government officials have pledged to crush the rebels' by the end of the year.
On Wednesday, the air force bombed a rebel fortification in the northern rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi in support of infantry troops fighting in the area, the military said in a statement. It provided no details of casualties or damage.
Nanayakkara said ground battles Tuesday in the northern regions of Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Welioya killed 27 rebels and two soldiers.
The rebels have been fighting for an independent state in the north and east since 1983, following decades of marginalization of ethnic Tamils by governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority.

LNP members,
Tigers exposed our weakness once again regardless the success or failure of the latest TAF stunt.
Tigers had used surprise and the low tech of our air defence system to carry out this bombing, probably adding the sense of security felt by some of the SADF within the camp.
Yes if we go through some common lines we should be ASHAMED. But I'm happy that no one got killed from SLN. A life worths more than PRIDE.
Yes it is a big stunt for TAF, no doubt about that. Giving some headache to military planners in the South and giving some morale boost for the diaspora. But could they achieve a significant victory there? I don't think so.
Will TN politicians be able to convince India to put some extra pressure to GOSL to halt current military operations on the base of HR violations after this? The chances seem to be very low. GOSL can use this to shout out to every one telling LTTE has to be wiped out, and it will be done without much objection.
LTTE achieved some short lived victory with this attack, gave some areas to think to the military planners and GOSL. But on the long run what will they achieve with this attack? Will the current military operation stop, no. Will youth stop joining SLDF, I don't think so.
But this is clearly a sign to SLDF that we can't take anything light in this war. LTTE seems hurt badly, but they are not dead. Tough times will be ahead for both LTTE and SLDF, added TN politicians who try to convince something to Indian government and even Obama. |

6 killed, 24 injured in Air Tiger attack
Wednesday, 27 August 2008 13:36
Six naval personnel were killed and 24 others injured in an air raid by the LTTE on the Trincomalee Naval Base last night (August 26th), defence sources said.
Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry website, citing Navy sources, said the navy base was warned by the Air Force of an approaching Air Tiger aircraft around 9.00 pm.
'After few minutes, naval troops detected the aircraft and engaged it with anti aircraft guns. The machinegun fire caused the aircraft to make away without entering the naval dockyard,' it adds.
Noting that the LTTE craft dropped two bombs into the camp, the website says that only one had exploded.
Communication was cut off with the eastern port city following the incident.

Well said mate. Even the most advanced radar can not clearly detect these tin cans flying at low level against the ground clutter. TAF can only do this propaganda stunts to thrill the diaspora now. One thing they might try is a suicide mission of desperation when the going gets real tough. If you know you are not returning, then you only need half the fuel and rest of the load could be their chemical WMD or TNT and Napalm..
You can not discount their effectiveness until they are caught and destroyed. |
