Trincomalee Navy camp attacked by LTTE aircraft
(Lanka-e-News, Aug 26, 2008, 10.45 PM-2nd edition-) An LTTE aircraft launched an attack targeting Trncomalee Sri Lanka Navy camp around 9.15 PM Today(26).

Media Center for National Security (MCNS) stated that the air defense system of the camp was activated since Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) warned that LTTE aircrafts were arriving in three minutes before the attack. MCNS stated that the aircraft dropped two bombs amidst the retaliatory attacks and one bomb exploded whilst the other was not exploded. MCNS said that no reports have been received on damage to life and property. Two LTTE aircrafts engaged in the attack and there were no reports on the damage they received in retaliatory attacks. But Defence Ministry confermed 4 Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) sailors have sustained injuries after a LTTE air attack

Unconfirmed sources said that one bomb dropped near the residential quarters of the Navy personnel while the other dropped in a thicket. Two persons were killed and twenty were injured in this attack, unconfirmed sources said.

Residents of the area say that they heard two massive explosions from the side of the Navy camp followed by around half and hour firing towards sky. Electricity was disconnected in the area with the attack. An eye witness in Trinco said to BBC, 'At once, there was an explosion which shook the area. After a while, there was a similar explosion'

At the same time a plane flew over where we were with a sound similar to a motor bicycle. Immediately after that, there were firing. It was like a huge fire works all over Trincomalee, he added.

LTTE has not made any statement in regard of the attack so far.

Six naval personnel were killed and 24 others injured in an air raid by the LTTE on the Trincomalee Naval Base last night (August 26th), defence sources said.

Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry website, citing Navy sources, said the navy base was warned by the Air Force of an approaching Air Tiger aircraft around 9.00 pm.

'After few minutes, naval troops detected the aircraft and engaged it with anti aircraft guns. The machinegun fire caused the aircraft to make away without entering the naval dockyard,' it adds.

Noting that the LTTE craft dropped two bombs into the camp, the website says that only one had exploded.

Communication was cut off with the eastern port city following the incident.

The LTTE is yet to confirm the said air attack.
