GOTA DID NOT RETIRE FROM THE ARMY.
Gota abandoned the Army!
Gotabhaya is the real traitor - Ranil
Wednesday, 04 Jun 2008
Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has accused Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of being the real traitor, after having abandoned his troops and fled the country.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said that he would refer to the Defence Secretary by name without fear, although the media has been warned against mentioning his name.
Addressing the media at his official residence in Colombo today (June 04th), the opposition leader said that the worst thing that could happen to you as journalists is that you would be abducted for about two or three days for mentioning Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's name.
The occasion was the swearing in of newly-elected UNP and SLMC councilors for the Eastern Provincial Council.
Speaking further, he said, 'Today, we have to safeguard the right to universal franchise and media freedom. Without media freedom, there would be no democracy. In the past few weeks, a journalist was abducted and another murdered. Four others were threatened with death. Further, journalists were severely warned against writing against the war as a traitorous act.'
'It is natural for various people to air various opinions on whether the war is being waged correctly. Waging a war incorrectly destroys the lives of heroic soldiers. Journalists have been making various statements since the time of the late President J.R. Jayewardene. That is to bring military strategy on the correct path,' Mr. Wickremesinghe said.
'It is the right of the media to tell the truth. Even during the worst of times, journalists did not flee the country. They remained here to speak for the country and for democracy. How can such journalists be accused of being traitors? he asked.
'It is persons who did not give leadership to the army in a difficult situation, and fled to America can be described as traitors. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's request to resign from the army and leave for America came during our regime. Ranjan Wijeratne informed me about that. But I would not tell you the rest of what he had told me.'
The Opposition Leader said, 'Anyway. This person abandoned his troops and fled to America. He was not in the country when President Ranasinghe Premadasa liberated the eastern province from the LTTE, or when President Chandrika Kumaratunga launched an operation to free Jaffna. For that purpose, our heroic soldiers sacrificed their lives, while certain persons rose to the highest ranks in the army.'
On this occasion, councilors who were elected to the East PC by contesting under the 'elephant' symbol, including SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem, took their oaths of office before Mr. Wickremesinghe.
Addressing them, the opposition leader described them as a group that fought for democracy in the east.
Had there been a free and fair election, you would have sworn in as ruling party members, including the chief minister and other ministers, he told the councilors.
Mr. Wickremesinghe advised them that their priority should be to win back the democratic rights lost to the people, and not to obtain ministerial positions.
The East PC councilors had made big sacrifices and got elected in order to establish democracy in their area, he added.(LD)
