Journalists protest in Sri Lanka

Saturday, 9 August 2008 - 8:30 PM SL Time

Friday, August 8, 2008, 18:41 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association staged a march today in Colombo to protest the recent attack by Labor Minister Mervyn Silva and his supporters on Sirasa television journalists in Kelaniya.

Journalists from five media organisations supported by opposition politicians and Buddhist clergy demonstrated near the presidental residence accusing the President and government of interfering with police investigations over Minister Silva`s continuous attacks on media personnel.

Despie that the attack on Sirasa journalists in Kelaniya was cought on tape the police have failed to arrest any suspects yet.

Journalist union leaders accuse President and the government of protecting the rogue Minister who attacked the news director of the state-owned television station Rupavahini last December.

Recently the Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa denouncing the recent conduct of Mervyn Silva said he will take action to prevent such situations taking place in future and to put a complete stop to it during his tenure as the Minister of Mass Media and Information.

Political observers say the Mervyn Silva`s behavior brings the entire ruling party to disgrace and he is a liability to the party. They question why no action is being taken against his rogue acts by the party or the President.

As long as the 'Bath parcel' and the 'Gal bothale' is provided by
Sirasa & Rajaumahandren.

Where were these journalist, Politician when LTTE bombed the students of Katubedda, Moratuwa and other places. I like to see them protest at the next LTTE bombing.

Kee denek malada?......Did they protest then? Hora Yakku.

At least Mervin has guts to stand up to these media persons.

Mahinda Mama is having a ball in Beijing in these days. So not the right timing.

Silva seems to be above the law anyway. He will get photos of the demonstrators and each each of them may receive some nasty visitors.

Not really new, but most Sri Lankans seem to find this ok for their country. Silva for president :-) and all independent journalists will end up in Silva's white vans.

But i use it as a matter of respect to the Sinhalese way of looking at their leader in the same way i say Berty Anna for example.

I simply don't like the Sri -Lankan Journalism.

It is simply the western style in which through lies, manipulation, etc., wrong views are published.

SriLankan Journalists don't develop our own style which can respect.

they are using the pen to earn a buck which is cheap journalism. Instead they should inform what should be informed. Because there are certain thing every body should not need to know. On the other hand, they know that the pen is mightier than the sword.
