Sri Lanka: A profile

CBC News Online | July 31, 2006

What would become modern Sri Lanka was settled by Sinhalese immigrants from northern India more than 2,400 years ago. They forced the native people into the mountains. By the eighth century AD, Tamils arrived from India in increasing numbers.

Sinhalese have always been in the majority and the two groups have alternated between peaceful co-existence and outright hostility.

In 1411, Chinese forces briefly occupied part of the island, which had been partitioned into a number of petty kingdoms.

They forced the native people into the mountains.

Thats right... but, 'native people' were Tamils. Thats why Tamils have the right to claim the whole land! But, Tamils have made a concession to North Indian invaders, who have taken the name Sinhalaya, by claiming only NE part of the island!
