but the problem here is we don't have open flames to burn dried chillies, and it's painful when the pungent smell comes out,..
Sakura 800CFM range hood is the answer. Sucks like a pro :) |

They separate the seeds/grain, soak in water overnight and crush them in the 'miris gala' or Wangediya to get 'Thalichcha Rice' then they remove the paddy husk to collect Habala pethi,...
Add some sugar, salt and coconut,... eat for the breakfast...
habala pethi with kurumba loda and some sugar is really tasty. |

Have you ever tried 'nivudu hal bath' + pol sambol ?
Usually, it is very hard to cook 'nivudu hal', so people throw them.

I have not tried the habala-pethi. Thanks for the description.. Strange though.. My mother had some paddy fields in Kurunegala when we were very young and we used go to 'kamatha' and watch the meeharakas going round and round all night ('kola paganawa') as kids. I can not recall habala pethi at all.
Where can you buy these things ? Never too late to taste it eh ?

Freelancer,
Now I feel included. We had plenty of nivuduhal.. My father is a real fan and we ate that stuff often. Hard to cook because it becomes 'beri' easily.

You can buy them from Indian stores,... they are in 10 lb bags, both red and white,..Ask the Indian guy in the store, he will tell you...
May be Chennai guy or Maninder might give the exact word,..
I will find it when and if I go to the Indian store next time,.... |
