Sri Lanka s biggest ever security operation is underway with armed forces and police given multiple targets to thwart a major LTTE attack during the 15th SAARC conference.
The military said preventing an LTTE attack in the city and its suburbs in the next few days would be a major priority. It would be an element in the overall security objectives aimed at keeping the LTTE at bay, a security official said.
A series of security operations in the city and its suburbs and the provinces over the past two years had helped eliminate many LTTE operatives, net some and detect large stocks of explosives, the police said. Had they been successful in replenishing their supplies, they would have struck this week, the police said.
The bottomline was that security forces and police would have to thwart major terrorist attacks in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, Kandy or down South, he said. `They ll attempt a major assault to make their presence felt,` he said, warning the LTTE could strike anywhere.
Another official asserted the LTTE wouldn t make an attempt to target the visiting dignitaries but launch attacks to embarrass the government. He said major security assets including the artillery, multi barrel rocket launchers, Katunayake based jets and navy vessels would be high on their list of targets.
The SLAF s primary task would be to prevent LTTE aircraft from taking off from the Vanni. The SLAF has expressed confidence that it could meet the so called air threat. `If they are air borne we ll know,` a high ranking SLAF official said, adding the air defences including the Indian installed radar were in place to deal with the threat.
India would deploy a few transport helicopters for the convenience of the visiting Indian dignitaries, he said. Two Indian warships the Delhi class destroyer Mysore and Rajput class destroyer INS Ranvir would be stationed outside Sri Lankan territorial waters 12 nautical miles off the western coast, SLN headquarters said. The two ships would be in place today, he said.
The SLN s biggest task would be to thwart an attack on its assets, an officer said. According to him, the possibility of the LTTE trying to infiltrate the city in police or security forces uniforms couldn t be ruled out. `We are aware of the threat,` he said. The presence of large groups of personnel moved to the city and its suburbs on special duty might provide the terrorists with an opportunity to do so. `There are lots of personnel from the provinces and their presence might give the LTTE a chance to launch a surprise raid,` an official said.
The government has repeated its warning of possible attacks on public transport and the army on the advance on Mannar, Vavuniya and Welioya fronts has been placed on high alert to meet an LTTE counter attack. Late last week the army on the Vavuniya front repulsed an LTTE counter attack causing heavy damages to the attackers who withdrew leaving behind bodies of three dozen cadres along with a sizeable quantity of arms and ammunition.
The military said the LTTE wouldn t be able to muster a force strong enough to overwhelm any of the fighting formations deployed on the Vanni fronts. Since major battles erupted in August, 2006, combined security forces have regained the Eastern Province and are now on the offensive in the Vanni.

Sinthaka,
I agree with you. It is India who did all these. fed all the Tamil rebels, trained them, gave all the resources, then want all of them like their loyal dogs!

This is an Indian show off and also roaring warning to all Sri Lankans who think that they powerful and independent. From now on our cardboard heroes will keep away from the Indian diplomats.I remember the day Dixit was harassed by Sinhalese gang at Colpity!
Indians know that nothing will happen to their leader. If anybody dare touch any of the delegates Indians will rip off them into pieces.
Our forces are just a peanut when compare to the international standard. |
