A new movement to encourage the government to devolve power to the provincial councils was launched in Colombo on Thursday .
The inaugural meeting was attended by parties to the United Pople`s Front Alliance (UPFA) government as well as civil society activists.
Minister Dilan Perera speaking at the inaugural meeting said that there are certain sections within the government that oppose d devolution of power.
He said that this new movement has been launched to strengthen those who support devolution within the ruling alliance.
Minister Perera added that the government needs to be encouraged to devolve power to provincial councils to deal with police and land matters.
I have no problem with the word Elam but it should be a Tamilnadu style Elam where all of us could live together said Dilan Perera.
Opposition
Referring to the
Jathika Hela Urumaya`s opposition to devolution of power Minister Rajitha Senaratna said that all the Buddhist monk parliamentarians who were sworn allegiance to the 13th amendment of the constitution have accepted devolution of power to the provincial councils in principle.
Now there is no use in opposing devolution`` said Minister Rajitha Senaratna.
MY COMMENT:
This is by politicians who need more power to the Provincial councils because more power means more money in their pockets.
People of economically developed countries hate TOO MUCH GOVERNING. THE REASON IS PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY more taxes to maintain MORE POLITICIANS.
At present, not all the people in Sri Lanka are paying Taxes. Think about the time when every Sri Lankan has to pay taxes.
SO, people should ask for LEAN central govt with less politicians.
20 million people of Sri Lanka has 225 MPs in the parliament, an additionally Provincial councils as the major forms of govts.
India with o01 billion people has only 543 MPs in the central govt.
