Basil Fernando's poem written after the 1983 pogrom - a few lines remembered. Basil is one of these fine people born into Sinhalese community and worked to maintain peace and still work as the Director of Hong Kong based Charity.
On that score either. Yet I remember the way they stopped that car,
the mob. There were four
in that car, a girl, a boy
(between four and five it seemed) and their
parents--I guessed--the man and the woman.
It was in the same way they stopped other cars.
I did not notice any marked
Difference. A few questions
in gay mood, not to make a mistake
I suppose, then they proceeded to
action, by then routine. Pouring
petrol and all that stuff.
Then someone noticed something odd
as it were, opened the two left side
doors, took away the two children, crying and
resisting as they were moved away from their parents.
Children's emotions have sometimes
to be ignored for their own good, the guy must have
thought. Someone practical
was quick, lighting a match
efficiently. An instant
fire followed, adding one more
to many around. Around
the fire they chattered
of some new adventure. A few
scattered. What the two inside
felt or thought was no matter. |

These two .. Pakkiasothy Saravanamuttu, and Jehan Perera says 'no lessons learnt'. True enough .. they will articulate the 'position' which their NGO Masters expect them to make .. and it has nothing very much to do with 'their anguish' for the country or its peoples. (There are a few more like them .. no more than 'dollar kaakkas').
On the other hand the disastrous program of violence un-leashed by a trusty of JR Jayawardene's in July '83 has brought about a lot of 'soul-searching' .. on ways and means to bring about a 'settlement' to the problems that stand between the two major communities.
A reasonable approach .. talks and power devolution .. has been advanced by GOSL. (But it is 'tempered' with experiences from the past .. first, the LTTE must agree to 'giving up' its pretence-ful military trappings ..).
It is for the LTTE leader-ship to 'take up' this Offer .. and see how far they can 'go' with it, in achieiving a measure of self-government that is satisfying .. while agree-ing to the GOSL demand, that Unity of the State of Sri Lanka must not be compromised.

Fonseka said the LTTE had 3,000 fighters and pledged that the military could defeat them by mid-2008.
Lot of people talk about this 3000, 5000 etc.etc. figures. But what they don't understand that General Fonseka used it as a tactical figure. If he told at the begging that there are 15,000 soldiers and we are going finish them all, many would think that LTTE could not be defeated and would not yield his cause. So he had to give a false target to convince those who were on the fence. As the commander, he very well knew exact numbers. |

I am not saying all conditions are 1oo% similar to that.so far army has captured coastal areas mostly. army has not yet reached heart of vanni . then onle ltte will make an attempt to encircle army cutting off in different points use their indirect fire heavily and that and do their final mob up operation.
for the investment ltte make for this offensive they will expect a reasonable return in the form of arms and amno from sla including artilleries,MBRLs and battle tanks.
Well still to surround and lay siege to an army is not easy. Especially when the besiegers have limited capabilities of manpower and weaponry. Either ways if LTTE wants to surround I doubt that they will wait this long. |

This is what SLA exactly looking for. LTTE does not have enough force ratio to meet SLA in wanni. If they want to attack SLA in wanni FDL, then they have to withdraw some fighters from Killai-Muhammalei-Nagakovil FDL. This will open an opportunity for 12000 reserve SLA soldiers in Jaffna to overrun Jaffna FDL and march to wards Kilinochchi via Elephant Pass.
With DPU and commandos nibbling aways LTTE in the heart of wanni LTTE has to find some reinforcements from somewhere just to keep up the defences. ultimately it will be forced to reduce its defences in muhamalai. |

yeah I read that. That is a second hand article on Revy's!! page in which the 'reporter' quotes another articles version of the interview. That isn't proof. Proof would be an actual quote from Lt.Gen. Fonseka where he says the LZTP will be completely defeated by Aug.
I know you won't find such a quote so let me fill you in on the truth. What he actually said was Aug 2008 would be the turning point in which the LZTP would be beaten to the ground. NOT completely defeated. |

Wanni is surrounded on all prongs
By Shanika Sriyananda

The Security Forces have occupied the LTTE's Forward Defence Lines and surrounded the Wanni LTTE bases from all directions. The Army Chief said that the LTTE could not prevent losing their remaining 3000 cadres and there is no assurance that the LTTE Leader V. Prabhakaran would survive for the next six months as the Sri Lankan Air Force plans to attack all the LTTE bases.
Therefore the three armed forces are confident of wiping out the LTTE, which is now smarting its wounds due to the present military operations.
The Army Commander Gen. Sarath Fonseka is highly satisfied over the successes against the terrorists in the outgoing year and said that the prime target of the military was to destroy the LTTE's presence in the North completely.
In an interview with the 'Sunday Observer' the Army Chief said that there are around 3000 LTTE terrorists remaining and that the military targets to annihilate them within the first six months of the next year. 'Our daily target is to kill at least 10 LTTE terrorists and for the last few months over 500 LTTE carders have been killed by the armed forces. We have weakened the LTTE by 50 per cent or more and we are confident we can go that extra mile in the coming year', he said.
He said the correct directives and the support given by the President and the Ministry of Defence had helped the military to achieve the set targets. ' All the citizens are waiting to see an end to terrorism. The President very clearly announced his firm opinion about wiping out terrorism and bringing political solutions to address the problems of the Tamil people', Gen. Fonseka said.
He said the military has come a long way defeating terrorism and the military operations in Wanni were 100 per cent successful. ' The damage to the LTTE in Wanni is high and their major camps have already fallen', he said adding that now the outfit is facing a severe shortage of man power.
'Bodies of the LTTE Police and the Sea Tigers seized by the armed forces show that the outfit is facing a severe shortage of man power and it is evident the out fit is in total disarray', he said.
Meanwhile, over 8000 army deserters have reported back to the army. Gen. Fonseka said the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together work out to block the LTTE's gun running activities.

while agree-ing to the GOSL demand, that Unity of the State of Sri Lanka must not be compromised.
What is not said is the imposition and maintenance of Unitary State. Unitary State is the biggest stumbling bloc to the 'unity of the state' and what is not learned by the elitist rulers is that Unitary State has been destroying the country.
What the president did to undermine the work of APRC and compel it to produce the failed 13th Amendment which is opposed by both Sinahese and minorities as the solution shows that he is not interested in the unity but only the unitary state. |
