COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Sri Lankan forces battled rebel gunmen deep inside the nation's northern jungles Thursday, killing 25 guerrilla fighters and seizing new territory, the military said. Other battles killed 25 rebels and four soldiers, the military said.
The fighting in the northern Mullaitivu district, a key part of the rebels' de facto state, began early Thursday morning and erupted into hours of gunbattles, said military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara.
Troops eventually captured a section of rebel-held territory about two miles south of the village of Mallavi, which lies along a key road the rebels use for moving troops and supplies, he said.
Troops killed 25 rebels and recovered seven of their bodies, he said.

Breaking news
sources from vanni reveal more youths are joining ltte as people are displacing from their villages due to army's advances and shellings.
excellent, this 'breaking news' will lead to punctured kidneys. Tell them to run quickly because the SLA doesn't differentiate between new terrorists and old terrorists. |

57 Div Troops & Special Forces Capture Area to South of Mallavi Town
(24.07.2008 16:35 SLT - SL Army)
MANNAR : HEROIC TROOPS of the 57 Division and Special Forces in the MANNAR front, WANNI forging ahead triumphantly in areas to the north of VANNAKULAM, about 03 km to the south of MALLAVI town Thursday (24.07.2008) afternoon brought a well-fortified LTTE stronghold area completely under control killing twenty-five (25) terrorists and injuring a similar number.
Scores of Tigers who have also been reportedly motivated by LTTE s Artillery Chief and MANNAR sector 'BHANU', just hours before valiant troops rolled on to that area could not resist the fire-power of the advancing troops. The fight for dominance in the area commenced as the first light on Thursday (24.07.2008) fell when brave troops started their advance into Tiger controlled areas.
By 03:30 pm on Thursday (24.07.2008) troops have collected seven (07) dead Tiger terrorists, one (01) 120 mm weapon (artillery mortar), two (02) 81 mm mortars, forty-eight (48) 120 mm rounds, seventy-four (74) 81mm ammunition rounds, four (04) ICOM sets, two (02) motorbikes, five (05) T-56 weapons, one (01) binocular, one (01) tractor and many other explosive devices as the troops after fighting settled started clearing the area.
As this report was being pasted, troops in control of the area were consolidating their positions while carefully removing booby traps and other explosive devices infesting the area. Many more LTTE items, left behind by fleeing Tiger terrorists are yet to be collected by the troops.

Fonseka reveals
Adding to President Rajapakse's woes Army Commander Major General Sarath Fonseka told the Foreign Correspondent's Association recently that although the LTTE was largely discredited as a conventional army that it will take at least one more year to blunt them as a formidable force. However he also went on to say that since there was Tamil nationalism prevalent the insurgency will go on forever and the LTTE could endure for more than two decades at least.
Bleak news from a man who once said he would destroy the LTTE by August this year by killing 3000 of their cadre. According to official figures already 9000 have been killed since 2006 and it is not even the end of July. Yet General Fonseka now feels the LTTE though blunted would endure for another two decades or more.
This is despite the fact that both President Rajapakse and his brother Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse having pledged to end this war at various times within 1-3 years and not leave it to the next generation. |

Ltte is allowing sldf to their territory like what Rassians allowed German army. soon sldf will face a large debacle in the history of eelam war. the rapid speed in which sldf enter into ltte territory means they are not consolidating captured positions strongly and which will lead to loss of captured territory to ltte by even a small offensive by ltte.
as per sarath he is not interested in capturing territory so if ltte strikes back strongly he will withdraw and justify that holding/ capturing territory is not his strategy and killing ltte only is his strategy and he will say he has achieved that even after losing territory to ltte.
