No Sinhalization in east: champika ranawaka
By Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera
Environment and Natural Resources Minister Champika Ranawaka in Parliament yesterday scoffed at the allegation of Sinhalization of the East, saying that the Sinhala population had, in reality, dwindled in the province during the last few years.
Minister Ranawaka made this point while speaking during the debate on the North- East Issue in the House yesterday. Citing an example, the Minister said that the Sinhalese population in the Ampara District had come down from 236, 583 in 2001 to 228, 938 in 2007 whereas the Muslim population had increased from 249, 620 to 268,630 during the same period.
He was responding to TNA MP R. Sampathan who charged earlier that the government is trying to Sinhalise the East. Mr. Ranawaka said it is the Sinhalese people who had suffered from the conflict in the East.
Referring to the present military onslaught in the North he said the objective of it is not to violate human rights of the Tamils but to restore their rights by defeating terrorism. He said the previous efforts made to defeat terrorism by former Presidents J. R. Jayewardene and Chandrika Kumaratunga were not successful.
He said it is essential for the country to avoid foreign intervention, to be vigilant on the Indian factor, and to establish a correct mind set which is needed to defeat the terrorists.
In this respect the Minister explained that the call for the setting up of a powerful independent human rights monitoring body is to give an opportunity for the battered terrorists to re organize themselves.
He said the country should be aware of the actions of Tamil Nadu which in calling the Indian government to intervene to solve the national issue in Sri Lanka stressing the need for a national consensus in handling this issue.
The minister explained that President Mahinda Rajapaksa got a mandate to create a proper mindset in the people to defeat terrorism.
In this respect the Minister explained that the call for the setting up of a powerful independent human rights monitoring body is to give an opportunity for the battered terrorists to re organize themselves
my dear 'learned minister' please explain how this will benefit ltte in re organising themselves?.
:)))))

Sinthaka,
The reality is that Tamils like you continuously fail to see the reality.
So, you see the reality that the LTTE is militarily crushed!
You envisage a reality that, after crushing the LTTE you solidify the Sinhala Buddhist Hegemony!
The paradox is that, you want an unelected militant body to behave responsibly, and at the same time you are unwilling to accept that an elected body that suppose to represent all Sri Lankan is acting irresponsibly!
The country was entrusted with Sinhala majority under the 1948 constitution to build a nation, and it is high time now for the Sinhalese to demonstrate that trust. They need to unite and offer a apolitical solution.
GOSL in the past, including the current one, had been negotiating with the LTTE, and there is no excuse now to say that no negotiations with the terrorists.
Isn t this the reality that, as Hajara said, the MR regime is dependent on Sinhala Nationalists for its survival? Hence, waging war is the only option that there is for him, and keeping this in view, how do you justify a war that is being fought on no principle at all but one of survival of the regime? The man himself had spoken sating that, the Tamil nationalism cannot be crushed militarily, and I asked you as to why not put forward a solution now. You have not answered!
You have avoided the real issues here obviously putting all the eggs in one basket that is to crush the LTTE. Say, at the end of 2009, and there is no end in sight, what is next?
What possibly can be lost by putting forward a viable solution and engaging the stakeholders? Just have look at how the British parliament resolved the Irish issue, and why not take leaf out of that, and act responsibly and constructively?

MR and junta government is harassing innocent tamils left, right and centre as well as day and night.
In addition to bombing tamil areas, over 50,000 people who were evicted recently from what is called shanties in Slave Island, Colombo are tamils who had fled north east due to heavy bombing.
Why is MR and junta government harass tamils like this?
It is shame. |
