Can we ever forget Black July - 1983?
Dew GUNASEKARA
Hon. D.E.W. Gunasekara
The Minister of Constitutional Affairs and National Integration of Sri Lanka
The ugliest and the most barbarous event in the post-independent Sri Lanka entered the pages of history 25 years ago. Some people ask why these blackest events are being reminded ritually in the month of July year after year. |

Why defence.lk did not publish the first ugly and barbarous sinhala only in 1956 and the state terrorism in 1958? |

Will America get its Indian Vice-President ?
John McCain is to meet Bobby Jindal during a trip to New Orleans this week, reportedly over selection of a running mate by the Republican presidential candidate, The Fix politics blog of Washington Post said quoting sources close to the McCain campaign.
Jindal, 37, is widely regarded within the Republican party nationally as one of its rising stars and has been touted as the best choice for vice president by a variety of party luminaries ranging from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to talk radio celebrity Rush Limbaugh.
Gingrich has called Jindal 'America's most transformational governor.'
naming Jindal would be a major symbolic step in fundamentally re-branding the Republican party. Jindal, an Indian American, would put a whole new face on a party that is widely seen by voters as controlled by old white men, the blog concluded.

Major conflict began in Sri Lanka between Government forces and the Tamil Tigers a quarter of a century ago. The government still claims it is winning the fight, and that it will soon end. Over the years war has become a way of life for many families in the country. |

The LTTE Political Wing announced Monday it will observe a unilateral ceasefire devoid of military actions during the period of the SAARC conference from July 26 to August 4.
The press release dated July 22 was to not only serve as an announcement but also as a briefing note on the conflict for the foreign delegates. It was also a not so subtle call for international recognition as an equal world player and self governing authority rather than a terrorist group.
The official statement extended good wishes to the 15th SAARC Conference on behalf of the people of Tamil Eelam, in its aims, to improve the economic development of the vast South Asian region and to create a new world order based on justice, equality and peace.
Clever move
The release then went on to list a number of grievances, human rights violations etcetera perpetrated on the Tamil people by the Sinhala nation.
The Tigers also said they are keen to develop friendship with the countries of the world and neighbouring countries and as a sign of goodwill the movement was glad to observe a unilateral ceasefire that was devoid of military actions during the period of the SAARC conference from July 26 to August 4. It was as the Tigers put it, a gesture to extend their cooperation for the success of the regional conference.
Shift of burden and threat
And then comes the burden shifting and the threat. 'At the same time if the occupying Sinhala forces, disrespecting our goodwill gesture of our people and our nation, carry out any offensives, our movement will be forced to take defensive actions.'
Vital to its deadly purpose the LTTE by announcing its unilateral ceasefire puts a multi pronged burden on the government. Already the absurdity and impunity with which the government has acted in breaking down homes and evicting long standing residents in the Slave Island area in violation of a court order, all in the name of SAARC has received wide negative publicity.
