4 TMVP members arrested at Pollonnaruwa for extortion
Four members of TMVP who had collected extortions from rice mill owners were arrested by Polonnaruwa police yesterday (21st). They were apprehended while fleeing after collecting extortions.
The group had visited several rice mills, threatened the owners with weapons and had asked for Rs.200,000/- as extortion from each mill owner. When the mill owners refused to pay extortion money they had been assaulted, looted the coffers and the extortionists had fled taking the telephones of the mill owners with them. The extortionists had attacked several rice mills and among them were Madheena Rice Mill, Leela Rice Mill and Manzoor Rice Mill.
When the mill owners complained to the police the extortionists were apprehended at police check point at Polonnaruwa while they were travelling in a three wheeler. When they were interrogated the weapons brought by the TMVP members were unearthed.
When 'Lankatruth' inquired from mill owners they said TMVP members had, on several days, broken into their mills, threatened them with weapons and extorted money saying they were Pilleyan's group.
When we tried to contact the Inspector of Police at Pollonnaruwa regarding this incident we were told that he had gone for inquiries of the relevant incidents. Meanwhile, a police officer who wished to remain anonymous said already there was pressure from the top authorities to Plonnaruwa police to release the members of TMVP.
