Sri Lanka`s defence ministry said Sunday it has killed dozens more Tamil Tigers in the latest ground and sea clashes, bringing a tally of reported rebel deaths so far this year to more than 5,000.

Sri Lankan Navy spokesman D.K.P. Dassanayake said eight rebel boats, carrying at least 16 guerrillas, were either destroyed or damaged on Sunday in an attack off the northwestern coast.

Elsewhere in the north, ground troops killed 18 rebels and lost one soldier during fighting on Saturday, the defence ministry said.

The deaths bring to 5,060 the number of rebels the ministry claims has been killed since the start of the year, when the government pulled out of a Norwegian-brokered ceasefire.

The ministry has reported the loss of 447 of its own soldiers in the same period.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who are fighting for a separate homeland, do not release casualty figures and seldom respond to government claims.

The government figures cannot be independently verified as journalists are barred from reporting from front line areas.

Sri Lankan troops are escalating their effort to dismantle the de-facto separate state the rebels maintain in the north of the country.

Army chief Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka Saturday said forces had wiped out two-thirds of the LTTE`s military capability and put its current strength at 5,000, with around 200,000 civilians forced to provide logistic support.

Last year the total LTTE strength was 5000 according to GoSL.
Which now would seem to be totally wiped out?
So has the GoSL won the war?

No. that is not how it works. Tigers keep recruiting while the army keeps eliminating them. Ninety percent of these killed are newly recruited, inexperienced young fools. Most of the real hard core is still there concentrated in Vanni.

The SLDF strategy seems to be reducing Tiger recruites, and it seems to work so far. When tigers lose town after town, they lose the size of the pool to recruite from. So in a years time, you will see drastic reductions in Tiger force.

This is a question of life and death but not figures. Many dragged into war due to poverty but not of patriotism irrespective to camps.
During the time of King Rajasinghe many nobles in king's court spoke Tamil. If not of British we all are by now Tamils. We are Sinhalese simply because of we speak Sinhalese. This war is against our own blood.Stupid idiots.

Gachula99,

Interesting theory. But is it true? war is mainly has affected the Tamils in the North as LTTE is killing their own, by sending them to a war that can not be won and by killing who appose the ruthless prbakaran and his authority. If he was so interested in Tamils and their struggle (so called) why did LTTE wiped out all the other teams that were operating in the early 80s. He would have combined them and would have made a larger force by giving the right leadership. without doing so he killed all of them and made him the man of the hour. Genocide is not caused by Army it's by own man parba.

Sam007,
During JVP hay days they killed many political prominent figures and professionals. Can you remember the many terrorizing events took place during those days.

Your posting is universal and could be apply to any society.Simply substitute the following Words such as Tamil, LTTE, Prabakaran, respectively with Sinhalese, Wijeweera,South. Can you see any difference ?

My theory was based on history books written by Professor Wimalananda Tennakoon.

We have to kill more to catch up with the number's killed released by the Tamil scum so just shoot anything that moves the gap is around 15000 so the armed forces have plenty of room to add up the number's.
