It is sad Major General Perera joined a team that betrayed the country by signing some stupid peace accord. There are lots of good stuff about Janaka Perera where he did not shoot captives during 1971 insurgency.
I think, the present UPFA govt should be blamed for This General being recruited to the UNP.
when he prematurely came from Indonesia, he offered himself for political service. At that time or even before his arrival Govt should have offered him a post.
UPFA did not do that.
So, UPFA, I think PResident too, should be blamed. |

I don't think AnuD is correct. AnuD has forgotten that Janaka Perera has a very strong UNP background. He was always very loyal to the UNP, eventhough the SLFP made him the Ambassador for Australia.
Janaka P and Sarath Fonseka NEVER saw eye to eye. I think Mahinda is very smart NOT to have both Janaka P and Sarath Fonseka involved in the WAR at the same time......They will be fighting with each other and Prabha will be winning the WAR....This is the kind of thing that happenned over the last 30 years...and I think for once, our military is doing well.
I think it is the UNP that needs to get stronger. And Janaka Perera can may be, make the UNP stronger. The Opposition in Sri Lanka being so week does not auger well for Sri Lanka. The Opposition simply does not have a political agenda that appeals to the Sri Lankan voter. That is the Main Problem with the Sri Lankan Opposition. I think Janaka Perera can improve the image of the opposition, and the President himself is probably wishing that he had a stronger opposition which can compete with him politically. Any President knows that a strong Government Needs a Strong Opposition. I think Janaka's support to the UNP must be viewed positively.
If Janaka can resurrect the UNP, it will be better for Mahinda, the UNP and the Country.
I fully respect Janaka Perera's decesion to Join the UNP.
I would have been dissapointed with President Mahinda if he attemted to tempt Janaka Perera into the Govt. by giving him 'Positions' as suggested by AnuD.
Mahinda has proved his ability to win over his political opponents like no other Sri Lankan Leader.
When Sirimavo Lost in 1977.........JR removed her civic rights, removed her from Parliament and Barred her from contesting the the 1982 Presidential election. Convicted Terrorists like Rohana Wijeweera were pardoned and allowed to contest the election. But Sirimavo was not allowed to even vote.......and not allowed a court hearing on the removal of her civic rights. JRJ used his 5/6 th steam roller majority to remove Mrs. B's civic rights by bringing in special legislation.
What happened in the end?? JRJ died while watching Sirimavo's Daughter CBK and Sirimavo herself occupy the Presidency and Premiership.........
When Mahinda won......on the otherhand, Mahinda pardoned the UNP National Organiser S B Dissanayake and released him from jail....Today Everybody knows that the UNP National Organizer is a free man because of Mahinda....
I think Mahinda is the most 'politically astute' leader that Sri Lanka has ever had.
While sticking to his basic principles like the Unitary State, He has also managed to win the political support of a large number of his opponents.
