Berty,
This Kadir or J'pulle were not seen as a Tamil by most Sinhalese. Just like Murali is not seen as a Tamil. |

Berty:
People vote based on party affiliation, race, gender and even caste. That is the reality. You cannot change that. And the answer is not breaking the country into pieces either.
People come here and spread bogus claims as if we have something in the constitution to elect sinhala buddhist. All complete B.S. |

Let me ask you a question. If an election is held in the Northern province, what are the chances of having a sinhala CM?
Most probably 99% chances it will be a tamil..again..as you rightly pointed out Jeyaraj was voted in by Sinhalese..but if the same Jeyaraj wanted the presidents job..do you think he will get it..no voters then would have looked at him from the Minority..I am not so sure about Jeyaraj anyway cos he is a Colombo shetty.
I am not talking about election at a provincial level but at the Presidential level |

Do you know that none of the people I voted became the president? That is a fact. :)
well if you take the # of votes even the example you put on JR's victory..there are quite a # of sinhalese did not vote for JR but GG would have never won it
Gerry
U brought a great point!
let me ask you a question..yes..U don't see Murali as a tamil but as a cricketer..will you give Murali the captaincy..TRY then you will know the TRUTH

To me, minority is minority. No one is special. May it be Muslim, chetty, tamil, malay or burgher. People did not vote along race line to elect Jeyaraj. Similarly, there were muslim parlimentarians from all over the country.
Heck, people get elected simply because of their popularity or sympathy. MGR because he was an actor. Arnold because he was an actor. But, the necessary ingradient was that they came from major political parties. Edited By - Dewey - 21 Jul 2008 14:45:01 GMT |

Berty,
I think Jeyaraj would have got at least 30% of the Sinhala Vote. That is base vote of SLFP. With 35% voting for UNP, the task would have been to convince the rest of the voters. |

I totally agree on a local provincial level yes..they did not look at them as Tamil or Minority but trust me..if it is the President's or the prime ministers job..they will look at the Minority aspect..like in U.S.A

Pawan..yes may be he would have got 30% but still not enough..whoever running against him will bring the race issue and trust me it will work in SL |

Yes true. Not just the minority aspect, being a woman makes it difficult to become commander in chief. |
