Do you think Jeyaraj won Gampaha because of tamil votes? No.. People in the area liked him. Likewise, Kadir and Jeyaraj were well known verteran politicians from biggest political parties in the country. They were high rankers within the party.

don't answer me by asking a question..
yes..Tamils can be MP's may be Ministers but the TOP Job..How good they are do you really think a Tamil will become a President..

Marksman
I don't think even Jeyaraj would have been elected..
Take Kadir..he could not be given even the PM's post..why? surely he is better than the present PM..give me a reason

The late President J.R. Jayawardene's first paternal ancestor was a Colombo Chetty and there is an excerpt from the biography of J.R. authored by Prof. K.M. De Silva & Howard Wriggins, in support of this. Don Adrian Jayawardene, J.R.'s paternal great-grandfather, descended from a Chetty family, but two or three generations earlier, a male of this family had married a Sinhalese by the name of Jayawardene from the village of Walgama near Hanwella and had taken on the name of Jayewardene and by the time Don Adrian arrived on the scene at the tail-end of the 18th century, 'the process of 'Sinhalisation' of his family had been completed.'

It is a tough task for a minority candidate to become president in any country. Not just in SL. Look at USA. Obama has a good chance because the incumbent is a total moran and he had the support of the party. Still it is a tough thing to do. That is the reality. If you look at other countries, Botha was the leader of South Africa, pretty much by force. Saddam Hussein was the leader in Iraq, also by force. Do you know anywhere else where a minority person as the leader of that country. Maybe there is, but very seldom.

Personally, I liked Kadir. He considered himself a srilankan before anything else

If You like kadir over a Sinhala leader your in the MINORITY like the Tamils are at present..u will like Kadir..may be you might vote for him..but at the end of the day Kadir would have still lost..

I think it is better we admit that the country is not prepared to accept a Tamil man not only as a President but not even as a PM...This is a fact..and tell me the word that you can use for not even considering a Tamil by the Majority sinhala voters

Let me ask you a question. If an election is held in the Northern province, what are the chances of having a sinhala CM?

I am with you on that..and I agree the same in SL..what do you call that? Minority and the Majority is still not ready..

How many Blacks are in the Senate and leaders on different org but still when it has to be the TOP job..White (majority) are still not ready..How do people look at when they vote..the don't see whether the man is capable but go on race and majority...

U don't have to be a rocket scientist to know this..

Tell me if you put KADIR against say a sinhalese as Mervin or Duminda..even then Kadir would have lost..That is the reality my friend

The Jayawardena family were initially Christians. As the Chetty religion is not Christianity their adoption of the Anglican religion would have been motivated by the lust for top posts in the State, a tendency shared by many of the top low country families as the Bandaranaike and Soysas. Adrian Jayawardena was made Mudaliyar of Chilaw by the British and by the act of appointment 1803 was made Mudaliyar of the Guides or Thombi Mudaliyar.

The similarity of the word Thombi (current Dutch Indian term for guide) to Thambi (Moor) made his enemies ascribe Moorish origins to him as was freely done during the Kelaniya elections of 1940 & 1947. Junius Richard Jayewardene himself was baptised as a Christian for his father, E.W. Jayewardane, great grand son of Adrian Jayawardena too was a Christian. Ten children were born to E.W. by his matrimonial alliance with Agnes Helen Wijewardena and subtly as E.W. was embroiled in his law profession and politics as ward member of New Bazaar, Agnes Helen converted all the children to Buddhism except one girl who remained a Christian. Agnes Helen came from a deeply fervent Buddhist family.
