(Colombo) An attempt is reportedly afoot to appoint Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to the national list MP position that fell vacant following the resignation of
JVP`s Wasantha Samarasinghe.
A group, including
JHU policymaker and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, NFF chairman
Wimal Weerawansa and senior lawyer Gomin Dayasiri, has made this proposal to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, government sources said.
Further, they have called for Gotabhaya Rajapaksa being given the deputy defence and civil security portfolios.
At a time when the war is in a very crucial stage, the defence secretary`s presence in Parliament will be decisive to end the war on a successful note, the group has said.
However, JVP Secretary Tilvyn Silva has asked UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha to fill the MP vacancy with Sujith Kuruwita, a JVP central committee member.
Meanwhile, the
SLFP`s central organization in Katana has requested the president to appoint Sudarshani Fernandopulle, the wife of the late minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, to the vacant position.
