Police are investigating an attack on a civilian by a group of persons suspected to be navy personnel attached to the Welisara camp around 8.30 pm at Ragama last Friday.

The victim, Rukman Fernando (24) was attacked with base ball bats and was admitted to the Emergency Treatment Unit with head injuries.

Police said the attack was the result of a naval officer being manhandled by a person near Nawaloka junction four days ago.

Following this incident, a group of persons believed to be sailors had descended on a house at Ragama and attacked an inmate presumably to avenge the manhandling of the officer, police said.

`They had escaped in the vehicle they came in`, police said. `They were in civvies`.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the civilian who was brutally attacked was innocent and was in no way connected to the beating up of the navy officer.

`It was a case of mistaken identity`.

Police investigations are continuing to arrest the suspects.

Crimes should not go un-punished regardless of who the criminal is. Sri Lankan armed forces have always punished the few bad apples when they were discovered after due process.

I feel sorry for the innocent victim
