Essential services will be crippled today: JVP

The JVP yesterday claimed its token strike today, backed by the UNP s Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya and over 800 trade unions affiliated to the National Trade Union Alliance, would cripple the entire public service including essential services such as power supply, transport, healthcare and water supply.

Speaking to the media at a hurriedly arranged briefing at the National Library Association auditorium yesterday, JVP trade union leader, and Parliamentarian K.D.Lalkantha said information had been received that the Government was threatening, intimidating and harassing employees to prevent them from participating in the trade union action today.

Police and armed forces had been deployed to intimidate them. There was also an attempt to prevent employees from coming to work on Friday.

We assessed the situation on Friday and Monday. If the Government is to carry out its tricks to harass and intimidate employees there will be more drastic trade union action on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, Mr. Lalkantha warned.

Commenting on the Government s charge that strikers were undermining the war effort of the security forces, Mr. Lalkantha said by demanding a Rs. 5,000 pay increase, they were helping the soldiers and the police.

The members of the police and security forces had expressed their support for the strike, but they cannot take part for obvious reasons.

By 10.00 a.m the success of the strike would be known. There will be total breakdown of transport, power sector and services at the Colombo Port, CPC, healthcare and many other sectors, a confident Lalkantha said.

Velupillai Prabhakaran understands only the power of the gun. The Mahinda Rajapaksa Government understands only the warnings of the strikes.

Tomorrow s strike is only a token to send the right signals to this government.

If the Government does not heed our just demands there will be more trouble in the near future, he said.

The Government took the wrong end of the stick when trade unions presented their demands. The Government started a mud-slinging campaign against trade union leaders through the State media.

If the Government is so confident about its capability of destabilizing the strike why the disinformation campaign? he questioned.

Mr. Lalkantha appealed to the public not to listen to or read State media if they wanted to know the truth. Go to the free press and read and listen to the truth, he appealed.

Police summon trade union leaders

The National Trade Union Alliance (NTUA) yesterday charged that the government was attempting to create a fear psychosis among trade union leaders to sabotage today s token strike.

Parliamentarian K.D.Lalkantha told the media that the police had visited the homes of several trade union leaders and asked them to come to the police station to arrange a work plan for the token strike.

We are on strike on a number of demands. We have nothing to discuss with the police, said Mr. Lalkantha at a media briefing held at the National Library Association auditorium.

Showing the media a police message form that had been issued by the Gampaha SSP s office, calling trade union leaders in the area for a discussion yesterday, he said the intimidatory tactics of the government would not work.

He warned that the government would reach its end soon if it resorted to anti-labour tactics. He pointed out that the right to engage in trade union activities was a Constitutional right. If the government tried to arrest or attack striking employees or trade union leaders, more drastic trade union action, with the participation of the entire work force in the public, private, semi-government and estate sectors, would follow, Mr. Lalkantha said.

It is 8am and nothing is 'crippled' right now. No shortage of public transport and the power is still on.

JVP you have exposed your dirty tricks again. However this time you have failed.

I think Govt should investigate JVP killings and should punish them severely. Because they are a lot which do not correct their mistakes ever. People have voted for them and elected to govt. They have not contributed anything to the country.

JVP is crippled a long time ago. That is why they joined with the UNP. Lal Kantha, solve your internal problems first rather than ruin the country.

Lal Kantha, solve your internal problems first rather than ruin the country.

Lan Kantha and Mahinda Rajapakse were comrades in arms in ruining the country as can be seen since dec 1, 2005. The destruction started with the purchase of foreign made weapons with the money borrowed at very high interest rates. Yesterday it was revealed that paying Rs 5000 increment to each govt employee will cost 55 billions and that has to be taken from the military expenditure.

All military expenditures are intended for rge destruction of the country. MR will destroy the North and Eastt without realising that the whole country will be badly affected.
