Before 1983, all of NE was under SLA control. Look what happened?

Same will happen again. SLA may claim territory, hold a big parade in Gall Face, but, Tamil forces will never quit. Remember the worrier Prabha appeared 2500 years after Elallan. Not, LTTE wants to wage 100 year war. The home turf advantage will come to play in 100 year war and invaders will have to pack up and go eventually!

A disabled soldier in election contest against General Janaka Perera
(Lanka-e-News, July 3, 2008, 6.45 PM) Presidential Media Unit announces that Mr. Upali wijekoon, the only survivor of LTTE bomb that killed Lt. General Denzil Kobekaduwa and Major General Wijaya Wimalarathna in Kaits Island in 1992, will contest for the North Central Provincial Council election. Mr. Wijekoon who lost legs in the attack, met the President at Temple Trees yesterday (02) and stated that he would contest the election to give value to all those who made such sacrifices for the security of the country.

He has said that the President Mahinda Rajapakse is giving right answers to terrorism and if the past leaders acted like him the terrorism could have been defeated entirely.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena also participated in the occasion

East lures biz sector

By Uditha Jayasinghe

The private sector is heading towards the East to reap more economic benefits, particularly in the apparel, fisheries, farming and dairy industries.

During the closing panel discussion with the Eastern Province Governor Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrama, USA Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission James Moore, USAID Director Rebecca Cohn, Hayleys PLC Rizvi Zaheed and Brandix Lanka CEO Ashroff Omar at the Sri Lanka Economic Summit 2008, stated that the onus was on the usage of BOI incentives and training labour to tap into the incredible potential of the Eastern Province. Recalling that paddy was one of the main contributions to the Sri Lankan Gross Domestic Product (GDP) the Governor was keen to increase the rice yield to 25% of national produce and also focus on upgrading the dairy farm industry. Already nine milk processing plants and 14 milk collection centers have been established to bolster the industry. In addition USAID has several projects in the pipeline including a water treatment plant, vocational training programmes and rural internet centers powered by private sector partners.

In fuelling a resurgence of farming, Hayleys PLC Rizvi Zaheed is setting the stage to increasing the existing 125 farmers to 400, expand 50 acres to 500 and generate approximately Rs.100,000 per acre of cultivated land. They are preparing to open a one-stop shop for farmers, inculcate local and foreign best practices and diversify crops to include maize, chilli, cashew, banana and coconut.

Companies that are interested in the apparel sector had their confidence bolstered by Mr. Omar who gave the Eastern business environment an optimistic prognosis insisting that if security issues and political instability were out of the way then the East would be ripe for labour intensive ventures. According to him the present employable cache of half a million people would soon be inadequate to supply demand.

The average monthly income in the east is Rs.2900 and expenses are tabled at Rs.3000. Even the lowest paying apparel sector job would pay a salary of Rs.7000, which would be very attractive for these people. Even though trained labour is scarce we have discovered that they can be employable with 60-90 days of instruction. The east has an 86% literacy rate and the BOI tax incentives are extremely attractive. Anyone who invests US$1 million and employs 100 people will be given a 5 year extension of their tax holiday, he said.

Currently three companies are registered with another to be registered before the end of the year. The Brandix factory in Punani has 400 employees with plans to expand to 2000 before the year is out and if we don t show our colours now we have lost the battle.
